  11. Begging 'busker' seen in Totnes 'playing' saucepan and stickpublished at 15:56 British Summer Time 15 August 2017

    Andrew Segal
    Local Live

Police in Totnes say beggars are being "more robust" in their attempts to get cash by getting busking licences and, in one instance, "busking" by hitting an upside down saucepan with a stick.

Officers said earlier this year they were cracking down on begging after several reported cases of shoppers being aggressively harassed and threatened with violence by beggars who were apparently making up to a £100 a day.

Police said on Facebook, external they were still seeing individuals coming in via train or bus from elsewhere "as they see Totnes as a soft touch".

They warned that there was a code of practice for busking licences, and that licences would be revoked "if this 'busking' is causing a public nuisance".

They added that they were also concerned that this activity would "deter genuinely talented buskers performing in the town centre".

  12. Primark sets the record straight on pronunciationpublished at 15:39 British Summer Time 15 August 2017

    Andrew Segal
    Local Live

Now, is it "Pry-mark" or "Pree-mark"?

How to pronounce the budget retailer's name has caused a basket-load of debate, with some claiming "Pry-mark" is an upmarket affectation. Others say "Pree-mark" is a northern thing.

    Primark

But Primark - which has branches in Barnstaple, Exeter, Plymouth, Torquay and Truro - has tried to settle the matter once and for all, writing on its website: "We like to use Pr-Eye-Mark."

However, this is a little unsettling for at least one person - me.

I was brought up in Belfast, where there has been a city centre branch for as long as I can remember, and the company was founded in the Irish Republic, opening its first store in Dublin in 1969 (although under the name Penneys).

However, it has always locally - in Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic, I think - been "Pree-mark".

Indeed, my sister told me off only last week for "mispronouncing it" Pry-mark, although it now transpires that I was actually correct - albeit completely inadvertently as the product of living in Britain for decades.
