    A Devon company has admitted a health and safety offence after a worker's hand was crushed in an industrial mangle.

    Anthony Seward, 21, got his hand trapped in the machine in August 2016.

    Heathcoat Fabrics has described the injury to Mr Seward as "a complete tragedy", which is "deeply regretted by the company".

    It "extends a full apology to Anthony Seward". The case at Exeter Magistrates' Court continues.

    A woman from Cornwall is drawing crowds in St Ives by dressing up as a mermaid and swimming through the harbour.

    Laura Evans quit her life in London to return to Cornwall. She says swimming in the sea helps her to feel calm.

    A former PE teacher of 30 years has been exposed as a "clandestine sex offender" who abused pupils since he was at teacher training college and has been jailed for five years.

    Glyn Jones taught at two high schools in Norfolk before he moved to Australia, but was brought back to England for a trial at Norwich Crown Court.

    The 57-year-old admitted seven counts of indecently assaulting girls under the age of 16 on the first day of his trial, and was sentenced to five years in prison.

    Judge Anthony Bate, sentencing, said the charges related to six girls who were aged between 13 and 16 years old at the time of Jones's offending between 1979 and 1996.

    He told Jones he had been a sex offender since the age of 19, when he was a trainee teacher at a college in Plymouth.

    People in Cranbrook, Devon, will be offered discounts on their supermarket shop, cut-price sports gear and free cinema tickets for hitting step count targets under a new NHS scheme.

    Cranbrook, a new town in East Devon, is one of 10 housing developments which make up the NHS Healthy New Towns programme, external.

    The proposal, aimed at cutting the pressure on the health service, will see users of an app rewarded for walking, NHS England said.

    Developers will also be asked to provide free bikes with new houses and flats to cut car use and encourage cycling.

    A drunk teenager fell to his death when he tried to scale a hotel wall as he took a short cut home, an inquest has heard.

    The Exeter hearing was told guests at the Sidholme Hotel, Sidmouth, heard a "loud thud" at 03:30 on 26 February as Sam Marriott slipped and fell to his death suffering a fatal head wound.

    The 19-year-old's mother, Debbie Marriott, said her son was popular, had a girlfriend and planned to travel after university, although he "did not know when to stop drinking".

    A detective told the inquest: ”It seems to me that Sam tried to climb the wall to the hotel while intoxicated in the middle of the night on his route home.”

    The inquest heard "scuff marks" were found high up on the hotel wall which matched his shoes.

    Fire crews say the cause of a fire which badly damaged a house in Newquay this morning was caused by a tumble dryer.

    While making the 999 call, people inside the two-storey property on Henver Road left the building following advice from the emergency services, Cornwall Council said.

    Two crews from the town said they managed to extinguish the fire before it spread outside the living room on the ground floor.

    A drugs gang who kidnapped a woman and made her drink toilet water before raping her have been jailed.

    Exeter Crown Court heard the gang, known as the Chyna Crew, kidnapped and raped the 28-year-old woman, who they believed worked for a rival dealer, in revenge for the kidnap of a woman who worked for them, 22-year-old Amber Olivia.

    In court the woman who was sexually assaulted said: "They threw a liquid over me from a beer can. I did not know what it was. One of them threatened to shave my hair off or set light to my hair with a lighter."

    Sentencing, Judge Geoffrey Mercer, told the three gang members: "She submitted to what you did because she was terrified. You have done untold damage to her."

    Cornwall's new fire boat is being made and Cornwall Council is asking you to vote on its name - and there's not a Boaty McBoatface in sight.

    It replaces Transco Phoenix which has been in service for the last 17 years, and will be based predominantly at Falmouth to deal with maritime incidents.

    A drugs gang which used rape as a weapon in a turf war with rival dealers has been jailed.

    Abdirahman Abukar, 19, of Alum Rock Road, Birmingham, Abdirahman Kadir, 21, of no fixed address, and Ibrahim Mohammed, 18, were all found guilty of rape, false imprisonment, kidnap and wounding with intent at Exeter Crown Court.

    Abukar and Kadir were also found guilty of possession of a shotgun with intent to endanger life or cause fear of violence.

    The court heard the three members of the group, known as the Chyna Crew, humiliated and sexually assaulted a woman who had acted as a runner for other drug pushers.

    Abukar and Kadir were jailed for 23 years and Mohammed for 15 years by Judge Geoffrey Mercer.

    Gang member Amber Olivia, aged 22, of Laburnum Road, Exeter, was found guilty of conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm and possession of heroin with intent to supply and will be sentenced tomorrow.

    Two fire crews have been dealing with a house fire in Newquay.

    Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service says the fire started in the living room of a two-storey house on Henver Road.

    He's a professional surfer paid to travel the world as a global ambassador for Reef, but Mike Lay has been telling us how he's also committed to patrolling West Cornwall as a lifeguard.

    Mike has worked for the RNLI for about seven years and patrols beaches at Sennen, Porthcurno and Gwenver as a senior casual lifeguard with the charity.

    Mike, who has recently returned from a big surf competition in Mexico, said: "My rescue and first aid experience comes into play fairly often and always affords me peace of mind that I can be useful in incidents in and out of the water."

    "‘Hundreds of people have been rescued and helped on our beaches for many years and I've witnessed some truly heroic acts by my colleagues over those years," he said.

  16. Major operation to rescue 10 people from coastpublished at 10:56 British Summer Time 22 August 2017

    Ten people have been rescued by lifeboat crews after getting cut off by the tide near Porthcothan Bay, in North Cornwall.

    It happened on Monday afternoon, and the major rescue operation involved the RNLI, a coastguard rescue team and local lifeguards.

    Newquay's lifeboats eventually rescued the group and brought them back to shore.

    There were no reports of injuries.

    Former Cheltenham and Crawley boss Mark Yates has distanced himself from speculation linking him with the manager's job at Torquay United.

    The Gulls are looking for a new boss after sacking Kevin Nicholson on Thursday, but Yates has told BBC Sport he is not in contention to take the role.

    Yates was spotted at Plainmoor at a match in March, but said his visit to Devon was "totally innocuous" as he was watching a friend play for Torquay's opponents Guiseley.

    It's part of the Tower of London art installation marking the centenary of World War One.

    The Plymouth Naval Memorial is the only place on a tour of six cities that will feature poppies actually on a memorial - and will remain on display until mid-November.
