    Large numbers of Portuguese man-of-war are still being reported on Cornish beaches.

    The Cornwall Wildlife Trust, external has had reports of 630 of the creatures in just one week, but says hundreds more are likely.

    At Portheras Cove near Pendeen on Thursday, 56 were reported to the Marine Conservation Society.

    People are reminded not to touch the creatures, but the society would like to hear about where they are, external.

  5. Plymouth general election report: Council recommended to increase election staffpublished at 12:34 British Summer Time 15 September 2017

    Plymouth City Council has received a report into electoral issues, external that led to problems at the last general election.

    Between 150 and 200 people were unable to vote, and about 2,000 postal ballots were not sent out.

    An independent report headed by Dr Dave Smith, the former chief executive of Sunderland City Council, looked into all aspects of the way the election was managed.

    He will present it to full council on 25 September.

    The council said his recommendations included telling it to:

    • Act swiftly to permanently recruit enough suitably experienced electoral registration staff to ensure the elections team is up to recommended staffing levels
    • In the meantime, ensure there are enough interim staff with sufficient operational experience to manage the team, build capacity and ensure focus
    • Make sure sufficient resources and properly documented systems, procedures and processes are put in place to ensure a successful election canvass and prepare for local elections in 2018 and plan for a future general election
    • Develop a more detailed communications plan with key stakeholders to ensure effective election communications especially when unusual situations arise
    • Carry out an independent review in January 2018 to ensure the council is suitably prepared for elections in May 2018

    Council staffing shortages and mistakes have been blamed on people being unable to vote in Plymouth during the last general election.

    About 2,000 postal ballots were not sent, and between 150 and 200 people were unable to vote.

    Thousands of votes were missed out of the result of one constituency, said findings from a report by an independent investigator.

    Plymouth City Council said "a dedicated project team" had been set up to act on the mistakes.

    The new polymer £10 note, featuring novelist Jane Austen, only went into circulation yesterday.

    A 103-year-old woman from Sidmouth is being awarded an honorary degree today - more than 80 years after she studied to become a teacher in London.

    Marjorie Hodnett went to Southlands Methodist College, which is now part of the University of Roehampton. She completed her studies in 1934.

    It was decided that work done by students before 1980 was degree-level, and the achievement should be recognised.

    Margerie wasn't able to attend a ceremony in London, so the head of the college is coming to her home to present her degree personally.

    The Cornwall Constabulary was formed in 1857 and continued until 1967 when it merged with Devon.

    Surviving officers from those days will get together for a reunion in Newquay at the end of October.

    The BBC understands that the report into voting problems in Plymouth for June's general election will highlight a catalogue of errors and staffing issues within the council's electoral team.

    More than 1,500 postal ballots weren't sent out. Some voters reported being wrongly turned away at polling stations and thousands of votes were missed out of the result of one constituency.

    The future of a day care centre for the elderly in Cornwall is in doubt.

    Truro's Age UK centre has been offering help for about 30 years, but changes in funding from Cornwall Council and problems with the building mean it may have to close.

    Age UK Cornwall said new pop-up services in local communities could be a suitable replacement.

    Cornwall Council said: "The premises in Truro is up a very steep slope, there is limited access and very restricted parking.

    "Age UK has told Cornwall Council they are looking at a range of options, including not having a set base and offering a community-based service in a variety of venues.

    "All scenarios discussed were based on Age UK's decision to explore alternatives."
