    A peace garden has been officially opened in memory of the longest surviving British veteran of World War One.

    Harry Patch, from Somerset, known as the "last Tommy", died in 2009 aged 111.

    Exactly 100 years ago today he was badly injured, and three of his friends were killed in the Battle of Passchendaele.

    As a result, he always called 22 September his personal remembrance day.

    Clyst Vale Community College in Devon has created a peace garden that remembers all those who died in the war, from all sides.

    National League side Torquay United have signed striker Josh McQuoid on a three-month loan deal from Luton Town.

    The 27-year-old, who has five caps for Northern Ireland, spent the second half of last season on loan at Stevenage, scoring once in 16 League Two matches.

    Two buckets filled with Portuguese man-of-war found on the flat roof of a pub in Cornwall were left there by a student living locally who wanted to bring them back to her campus, a bar manager says.

    The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) got a call from the Games Room in Falmouth on Thursday telling them about the buckets.

    It instructed the pub's staff to pour the creatures back into the water and "let nature take its course".

    Games Room manager Kathy St Quentin said the student had been collecting the siphonophores and was waiting for authorisation to get the creatures on to their college campus

    She said that the student left them on the easily accessible flat roof close to her flat, where they were discovered.

    Kathy added that the student was "a bit embarrassed" about what had happened.

    A Devon zoo which had to put down a herd of antelope because of bovine TB says it is trying to keep badgers away from its animals.

    Paignton Zoo culled the lechwe antelope after one of its animals tested positive for TB. Staff were "saddened" by the cull, which saw 10 animals killed, it said.

    Senior head keeper of mammals Rob Rouse said the cull was also partly carried out because there were "other species here that are vulnerable", including elephants, giraffes, kangaroos, goats and sheep.

    He added that the zoo was also looking at "how we can eliminate badgers from their enclosures".

    Badgers are believed to spread TB in cattle.

    Culls of badgers are taking place in Devon and Cornwall to prevent its spread in livestock. Opponents said culling was inhumane and vaccinating badgers would be more effective in preventing the spread.

    A man who supplied drugs to a 15-year-old girl who died after a party in a Devon park has told her family he is "terribly sorry".

    Fifteen-year-old Leah Kerry died in July.

    She was found unconscious at Bakers Park in Newton Abbot after she taking three tablets which were sold to her and two friends by Jacob Khanlarian (pictured).

    At Exeter Crown Court, Khanlarian, 20, of Elm Road, Newton Abbot, was jailed for three years after he previously admitted four counts of supplying the class A drug MDMA, and one of possessing cannabis with intent to supply.

    Leah used to live in Torquay before moving to Salisbury. She was visiting the town with her mother for her grandmother's birthday.

    She became unwell after taking the drugs and an ambulance was called at about 02:00 on the morning of her death. She died four hours later in Torbay Hospital.

    A note from Khanlarian read at his sentencing said: "I am terribly sorry for the pain I have caused to the girl's family and friends."

    City manager Lee Hodges said that he has made no drastic changes despite a slow start to the season.

    More than £10,000 in sterling and hundreds of pounds worth of Hong Kong dollars has been stolen in a burglary in Exmouth, police say.

    Officers have appealed for witnesses, external after the raid on the property in Cranford Avenue, which is believed to have occurred between 16:30 and 20:00 on Friday 8 September.

    Police said an offender got in through a ground-floor bedroom window and stole cash and jewellery.

    As well as £10,000 cash, about 8,000 Hong Kong dollars (worth £760) was taken, along with two Gucci wrist watches, a Rolex watch, a passport, gold and silver rings, a gold bracelet, a silver necklace, and a jade hoop-shaped pendant.

  13. Housing funding clarity needed because of 'mismatch between wages and prices in Cornwall'published at 16:07 British Summer Time 22 September 2017

    Housing providers in Cornwall say they need urgent clarity on future funding as the government launches a review of social homes.

    There are calls for the housing benefit bill to be brought down and reinvested in truly affordable places to buy and rent.

    Cornwall Council said it was hoping to build 1,000 new homes itself by 2021, with about a third of them being affordable.

    Andrew Mitchell, the cabinet member for housing, said: "Since 2010, we’re now into seven years where the government hasn't put a penny into social rents, so it's an issue that affects the whole of the country, but, I think, even more so in parts of Cornwall.

    "We have such a mismatch between local wages and local house prices."

    Staff at the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) say they were "very surprised" to get a call telling them that two buckets filled with Portuguese man-of-war were found on the flat roof of a pub in Cornwall.

    Hundreds of the potentially fatal jellyfish-like organisms have been found washed up on Cornish beaches over the past week.

    The MCS said on Facebook , externalit received the "odd news" from the Games Room in Falmouth on Thursday, commenting that "hydrozoans really don't belong in the pub".

    Peter Richardson, head of recovery at the society, said the MCS got the call after the landlord had already called Cornwall Council and the police.

    The pub's staff were instructed to pour them back into the water and "let nature take its course", he said.

    He added that, because of expected strong winds over the weekend, there was a possibility that more of the creatures might be washed up.

    A man has been seriously injured after being hit by a digger, police have said.

    The male pedestrian was injured in Millbrook Lane, Exeter, at the buidling site of a new housing estate, officers said. Initial reports from emergency services suggested he was trapped.

    Fire and ambulance crews are at the scene.

    Police said the man was conscious and breathing, but has serious chest injuries and will be airlifted to Derriford Hospital.

  19. Man, 50, missing from Totnes: Disappearance 'totally out-of-character'published at 14:07 British Summer Time 22 September 2017

    Police are appealing for information about a missing man from Totnes.

    Colin Cozens, 50, was last seen at his home on 12 September. Police said his disappearance was "totally out-of-character".

    Mr Cozens is described as being slim, with a bald head, blue eyes and facial stubble.

    He has Chinese writing on his left wrist. He was last seen wearing a khaki-coloured waterproof jacket and jeans.
