    Torquay United have extended the loan of Bristol City youngster George Dowling for a further two months.

    The 18-year-old, who is set to return to training soon after a hamstring injury, has impressed in four appearances in the Gulls midfield.

    He scored 12 minutes into his debut in the 1-1 draw with Chester on 2 September.

    Torquay say there is also the possibility of further extensions of his time at Plainmoor.

    Healthwatch, the patient's watchdog for health and social care in Cornwall says it's confident things will change at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust after NHS England placed it in special measures.

    It says it is keen to know what the trust plans to do next.

    The trust which runs Cornwall's main hospital was rated inadequate following a recent CQC inspection, with concerns raised about the safety of services including surgery, maternity, cardiology and opthamology.

    The chief executive of Healthwatch, Amanda Stratford said: "This is a very serious situation that is disappointing but not unexpected with poor ratings and a downward trend occurring in recent years.

    "Complex issues are causing the problems, many of which are system wide; there is no quick fix but we have to improve collaboration between the different agencies."

    The Pirates have had players sin-binned in four of their past five matches and have only won once so far this season in the Championship.

    "If you take the average of 10 points every time you lose a yellow card, you can see why we want to drastically eradicate that out of our game," Paver told BBC Radio Cornwall.

    "It's getting more difficult now with the way they approach a high tackle, referees tend to be way more severe with that, so across the board we are seeing more yellow cards. We're not the only side dealing with it, but we definitely have put that on the list of things to reduce."

    Tributes have been paid to a 30-year-old man who was killed in a crash on the A39 in north Cornwall last month.

    Daniel Chaffe was described by a friend as a "a kind, beautiful young man who was always full of life, laughter and fun".

    One friend said: "He truly brought joy to all of those who were lucky enough to work with him over the years and was a very dear friend to many."

    Mr Chaffe had recently moved to Helstone where he lived with his girlfriend.

    He was one of two people killed in the three-car crash on the A39 near Camelford on 23 September.

    A 70-year-old woman from Kent was airlifted to hospital with her husband but died on arrival there.

    Police have appealed for witnesses.

    Cornwall Council has pledged to work more closely with its partners in the NHS after the Care Quality Commission (CQC) criticised the county's care system.

    Inspectors said too many patients were stuck in hospital waiting for the support they needed to live at home or be placed in a care home.

    The councillor responsible for social care, Rob Rotchell, said, "we don't get it right all the time, there are people in hospital who shouldn't be there and they've experienced a level of care that should be better. The challenge to us is to make it better."

    Meanwhile, the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust has been placed in special measures after an inspection from the CQC.

    A major yacht race which was due to start from Plymouth next year has been moved to France.

    Next year marks the 50th anniversary edition of the Golden Globe Race, in which Sir Robin Knox-Johnston became the first man to sail solo, non-stop around the world when he came into Falmouth.

    The 2018 race was due to start and finish in Plymouth but, due to lack of sponsorship, has been moved to Les Sables d'Olonne, the home of the Vendee Globe, organisers said.

    It will start on 1 July 2018.

    Twelve firefighting crews from all over the county have been tackling a large thatched roof fire on a property in Bondleigh, near Winkleigh, in west Devon overnight.

    Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service received calls just after 18:00 last night reporting that the house's roof was alight.

    Initially eight fire engines from nearby locations, along with various special appliances, were sent to the building. Over the course of the night, more crews joined them to help tackle the incident.

    All the affected thatch was removed from the roof by 04:15 this morning, but firefighters are still at the scene, damping down and checking for hot spots.

    No one has been hurt.

    A deal has been struck to end the long-standing gender pay gap at the Met Office in Exeter, which employs 1,400 staff.

    Management and the union Prospect negotiated the plan after the issue went to a large number of employment tribunals.

    It still has to be accepted by staff, and some senior male staff could see their overall pay go down.

    Exeter full-back Phil Dollman says he has not given up hope of winning his first Wales cap.

    The 32-year-old got his first international call-up in May, but he missed the summer tour games against Samoa and Tonga after inuring his knee in Exeter's Premiership final win over Wasps.

    "Hopefully I can perform and contribute for Exeter in a good way which shows me in a good light and you never know I may get a call up again," he told BBC Sport.

    One person has been treated by paramedics after breathing in smoke in a house fire in Penzance.

    Crews from St Just, Hayle and the town were called to the incident on the ground floor of a three-storey house on Lannoweth Road.

    An explosion on a dredging vessel off Cornwall's coast has left one crewman with serious injuries.

    The MTS Xplorer was just south of Dodman Point, near Mevagissey, yesterday afternoon when a compressed air cylinder exploded.

    Two of the three crewmen on board were airlifted to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth after the explosion, which the RNLI said left the vessel with "substantial damage".

    The Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust has been placed in special measures following a damning report from health watchdog the Care Quality Commission.

    Inspectors visited the trust in July and raised concerns about patient safety in surgery, the maternity unit and the paediatric emergency department, as well as long delays in cardiology and ophthalmology.

    Chief Inspector of Hospitals Professor Ted Baker said patients had been "let down" with some "placed at risk" and the people of Cornwall "deserved better".

    Speaking on BBC Radio Cornwall, the trust's chief executive Kathy Byrne (pictured) apologised unreservedly for the trust's failings.

    She said patients should "not be worried" and the trust had taken action on all the areas of concerns raised by the CQC's warning notice.
