    A project helping former service personnel to build their own homes will be officially opened in Plymouth later today.

    The Nelson Project works in partnership with the local housing association, Plymouth City Council, and other agencies to create affordable housing for military veterans.

    Twenty-four homes have been created at the development in the Millbay area of the city.

    Road safety bosses from Cornwall Council and contractor Cormac have been assessing the worst accident blackspots on one of the county's most notorious roads.

    Two people died last week and another was left with life-threatening injuries following a three-car crash on the A39 in north Cornwall.

    About 7,000 vehicles a day pass through the route from Camelford to Allen Valley, and both residents and businesses are calling for 30mph speed restrictions and other safety measures to try to slow down traffic and reduce the amount of accidents.

    Two Devonport-based Royal Navy warships could be taken out of service in a bid to save money.

    HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark are amphibious landing ships, meaning the Royal Navy could lose its ability to assault enemy held beaches.

    BBC Newsnight understands the proposal is part of a package of cost-cutting measures by the Ministry of Defence.

    Royal Marine officers are alarmed at the plan, but the MoD has told BBC Newsnight that no decisions have been made yet and that discussion of options was "pure speculation".
