    A man whose husband is accused of murdering their adopted daughter says their house was "filled with love and happiness, all the time".

    Matthew Scully-Hicks, 31, from Delabole in Cornwall, is accused of abusing 18-month-old Elsie over several months and causing "catastrophic" injuries before she died in May 2016.

    He denies murder.

    Craig Scully-Hicks told Cardiff Crown Court that if he had suspected any violence, he would not have tolerated it.

    When asked over his preference to adopt a boy or girl, he said: "I just wanted a daddy's little princess really."

    He said they had decided Matthew Scully-Hicks would stay at home and look after the children. "He wouldn't have had if any other way," he added.

    A planned strike by bus drivers in the south west has been called off after bosses came up with a new pay offer, according to the union behind the strike.

    The RMT union said planned industrial action by Stagecoach South West staff on 13, 17 and 30 October would now no longer take place.

    RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said: "This shows yet again what can be achieved when trade union members stand together.

    "It is a tribute to our members that the union has been able to make Stagecoach South West come back to the table with an improved offer."

    Stagecoach confirmed the strike action had been called off "pending a referendum of members on a revised proposal".

    A spokesman said: "We are therefore pleased to confirm our services will operate as normal on these days, avoiding any disruption to vital transport links for the community."

    A discovery of cannabis plants on the A30 at Daisy Mount Cross in Ottery St Mary has prompted police to close one lane of the dual carriageway today.

    Officers were called at 11:15 BST this morning, and are still on the scene.

    Highways officers have helped close one lane of the road so the police can deal with the findings.

    The man in charge of the county's roads says if it wasn't for speeding drivers - there'd be no need to introduce more road humps and other calming measures.

    Some drivers in Cornwall say there are so many humps that their cars are suffering damage.

    Councillor Geoff Brown says humps don't cost much compared to other measures, but he is open to alternatives.

    The global company Thales is building a £1m centre in the South West for its maritime trials of unmanned vessels.

    The company says its Turnchapel Wharf development will create 20 highly skilled jobs.

    Bosses said the site was ideal because they have access to deep water just outside the Sound where the craft can be tested.

    Thales is a multibillion-pound company.

  14. Teacher jailed for 14 years for 'systematic abuse'published at 14:39 British Summer Time 10 October 2017

    A former primary school teacher has been jailed for sexually assaulting two girls, including one under the age of 13.

    Stephen Higgitt, 60, had earlier been found guilty of two counts of assault on a child under 13 by penetration, three assaults by penetration and one charge of sexual assault.

    Higgitt, previously from Wadebridge, Cornwall but who has since moved to Redditch, Worcestershire, was sentenced to 14 years at Truro Crown Court. The judge said it amounted to "systematic abuse" over five years.

    Sentencing, judge Simon Carr told Higgitt, who walked in court carrying a guitar case: "You have shown not a scintilla of remorse for what you have done. You have shown no insight, and no empathy. You abused trust in the most appalling way. You used your position as evidence she was lying and you were telling the truth".

    The offences happened over five years, between 2008 and 2013.

    A Devon teenager says a support service which helped him to come out as transgender at the age of 14 saved his life.

    James Scott, 17, from Devon, was born a girl but is now living as a boy and wants to undergo hormone therapy and surgery to change sex.

    Intercom Trust, which helps the LGBT community in the south-west of England, said 309 people came forward in 2017, up from 55 in 2011.

    There is currently a four to five month waiting list for face-to-face support meetings with the service.
