  4. New coastal erosion program could have prevented 2013 damagepublished at 17:48 British Summer Time 11 October 2017

    BBC Radio Cornwall

Scientists say they'll be able to predict coastal flooding and erosion in Cornwall in the event of more heavy storms like those in the winter of 2013.

They've developed a computer program which can forecast how sand and dunes can move depending on the wind and sea conditions so people living near the coast can be warned about possible damage.

It's being tested at the moment but Dr Mark Davidson from Plymouth University says looking back on the storms of 2013, it would have helped to predict the damage.

"If for example the beach levels were already low, that may have caused severe coastal flooding," he says.

  5. Air Race 1 World Cup: Meet the Brits competing in the world's fastest motorsportpublished at 17:37 British Summer Time 11 October 2017

    BBC Sport

As Yves Clarke fell from the sky and crashed to earth, breaking his back and puncturing his lung, he decided that flying would best be done with wings and engine propelling him.

The crash ended the former builder's thrill-seeking ways as a paraglider and prompted him to earn his wings as an airline pilot.

And now the Devon pilot is among a select group that will be going wing tip to wing tip in specially made Formula 1 planes at more than 250mph - and just 50ft off the ground - in pursuit of Air Race 1 World Cup glory.

"I always wanted to fly and the cheapest way when I was 17 was with a parachute on your back and jumping off mountains," Clarke told BBC Sport.

A 'remarkable' junior doctor from Devon took drugs from her own emergency department and took her own life, a coroner has concluded.

Dr Rebecca Ovenden, 32, who worked at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, was found dead at her home on 28 March.

The coroner was satisfied the hospital had the correct systems in place.

Assistant coroner Andrew Cox concluded: "Rebecca was better at helping and treating others than she was at helping and treating herself."

Dr Ovenden was the third female junior doctor to die or go missing in the south west of England between February 2016 and March 2017.

  8. Father swore at baby girl, court hearspublished at 17:13 British Summer Time 11 October 2017

    BBC Wales News

A man accused of murdering his adopted baby daughter was heard swearing and shouting at the child by neighbours, a jury has heard.

Matthew Scully-Hicks, 31, of Delabole, Cornwall denies the murder of 18-month-old Elsie, who died in May 2016 after suffering catastrophic injuries.

Neighbour James Bevan told Cardiff Crown Court he heard offensive swear words being shouted at the infant.

Mr Bevan, who lived in the semi-detached house next door to Matthew Scully-Hicks in Cardiff, said: "The first initial time I heard anything (unusual), I heard like a tantrum, like a 'argh', an adult's voice, a baby crying, and as the baby was crying I heard a door slam… I identified the crying as being that of a baby.

"I would normally hear similar occasions happening once a week. Shouting, babies crying, tantrums."

  9. Passengers angry after last minute flight cancellationpublished at 16:52 British Summer Time 11 October 2017

    BBC Radio Cornwall

Passengers who were given just three hours notice about the cancellation of a RyanAir flight from Newquay say they've been left disappointed and angry.

Many of the customers were already at the airport when they got a text saying their flight to Portugal last night wouldn't be leaving.

Ryanair says it was because of a strike affecting French Air Traffic Control and they couldn't have done anything about it.

Isobel Hughes from Fowey was one of those affected, and she says she wants more than just a refund

"You get a refund, but then obviously you are entitled to compensation, but it's very unclear and they're very difficult to get that from, I think," she says.

RyanAir says the European Commission needs to do more to prevent the strikes in France and say they've advised customers about refunds or alternative flights.
