The wife of a Cornish paramedic who took his own life has welcomed £80,000 worth of government money being spent to tackle suicide prevention among emergency service workers in the South West.

The money is going to a local charity programme, Pete's Dragon, based in Exmouth.

It will be used to train police officers, firefighters and paramedics to spot signs and intervene.

Del Wilton started to struggle with his mental health after witnessing "tragic" incidents at work and he took his own life in August 2013.

His wife, Nel said Del's work "led to a change in him".

"Looking back you can see he wasn't quite the life and soul that he'd been before and that's when he started making mistakes at work as well," she said.

Research by the mental health charity Mind found that a quarter of emergency service workers surveyed said they'd considered taking their own life. , external

  2. Penryn traders asked to leave premises before Christmaspublished at 08:14 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2017

    Hannah Stacey
    BBC Radio Cornwall

A number of small businesses working from units in Penryn in Cornwall have been served eviction notices.

Those working from Kernick Industrial Estate have been told they'll have to vacate before Christmas because the site is "unfit for purpose".

Dan Edwards - who runs two small firms from one of the units - says it's getting harder to find similar premises.

"There simply are no units like this anywhere, it's so difficult. Anyone who owns a business knows how rare these are," he said.

Irregular Cornwall, the firm behind plans to redevelop the site into student accommodation, says it's been told by experts that the buildings are "unfit for purpose and that the buildings are at the end of their useful life and, due to the presence of asbestos, in need of demolition".

Earlier this year, a planning application to build 260 student flats in shipping containers on the estate was turned down., external

Charges could be introduced for some public toilets in Torbay.

The council will meet this week to discuss putting 16 of the Bay's public loos out to tender.

It says it will have to borrow £1m to get the toilets refurbished, before putting them in the hands of a private company.

The company will then be allowed to charge between 20p and 30p per visit.

Local business owner, John Doherty, said: "There's a huge opportunity for some company to promote themselves within our town centre. There's a huge opportunity for people to use the loos, and we do need these facilities."
