An emergency overnight closure will be in place at Rumsam Bridge in Barnstaple this evening.
Devon County Council said the expansion joint on the bridge had been damaged and subsequently it's been found to be in need of "immediate attention".
The road will be closed between Bishops Tawton roundabout and the Lake roundabout from 19:00 and the road is expected to re-open by 06:00 tomorrow.
Additional work is likely to be needed in future to replace the expansion joint, Devon County Council added.

A new and interactive way to report graffiti in Exeter has been introduced.
The new system allows real-time alerts to be sent to Exeter City Council's clean-up teams so they can prioritise and inform customers when a job is complete.
Members of the public can now take a photograph of graffiti on their smartphone and via the new system, send it directly to the council.
Global Positioning Satellites allow the precise location to be pinpointed.
Councillor Stephen Brimble, lead councillor for Place, said it's a "great piece of kit".
He added that it "not only speeds up the reporting of graffiti" but it makes it easier for "the public to get involved, report graffiti and get updates. We are continuing to devote more resources to keeping Exeter clean".

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service has been working with the Environment Agency to help divert the flow of the River Ashburn.
It follows flooding in five homes in Ashburton today after the river burst its banks.
Work is continuing to reduce flooding levels.

NHS organisations in Devon have issued advice to patients after non-urgent operations and appointments were cancelled throughout the country.
Rob Dyer, lead medical director for the healthcare system in Devon, said the NHS in Devon are "actively assessing the number of planned outpatient appointments and operations we can carry out over this period, and how many we may need to cancel".
“Unless we contact you, patients with planned operations and appointments should attend as normal," he added.
Officials also told hospitals to delay routine outpatient appointments to concentrate on emergency care.
Former Exeter City goalkeeper Paul Jones rejoins the club on loan for the rest of the season from Norwich City.

The construction of a new multimillion-pound development at Carbis Bay beach in west Cornwall has "destroyed the environment", opposers say.
The Carbis Bay Hotel is carrying out multimillion-pound plans but a spokesman said the site is being carefully managed and that its new sea defences have replaced a crumbling old wall, protecting nearby cliffs from erosion.
Some local people argue that rubble like waste metal and nails are being swept out to sea.

Bags full of sand are being lowered into the River Ashburn to try to get it to run into an overspill weir.
Five homes in Ashburton were flooded earlier when the river burst its banks.
The Environment Agency is currently in the town working to redivert the flow.

Cornwall Council is urging people to "stay away" from exposed coastal areas at high tide.
It added although Storm Eleanor has now passed, there are still "strong winds" out there and the Environment Agency has issued flood alerts, external for high tide tonight and tomorrow morning for many coastal locations around the county.
High tide will be between 18:20 and 19:50 this evening and between 06:40 and 08:05 tomorrow morning.

Plymouth Argyle forward Alex Fletcher has joined Devon neighbours Torquay United on loan.
