Devon and Cornwall are set to benefit from £750,000 to be invested in the South West by the Environment Agency to help the region tackle plastic waste.

The money will pay for a new, dedicated team to find solutions to the problem of pollution and particularly single-use plastics.

The Environment Agency said it follows a pledge to eliminate avoidable waste, and crack-down on plastics, as part of the government's 25-year environment plan, announced yesterday.

Prime Minister Theresa May pledged to eradicate avoidable plastic waste in the UK by 2042.

A new plastics and sustainability team will be created across Devon and Cornwall working with businesses, local councils, charities and community groups.

The aim is to reduce the amount of waste across county, including its rivers and the coastline.

In the wake of Storm Eleanor, some beaches in Cornwall were littered with waste, including many plastic items.

Doctors in Cornwall are urging the public to get a flu vaccination after increasing reports of infection across the country.

Dr Steve Isles, consultant at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Trelisk, said he saw "around 30 cases" of flu in December.

"I get a sense that there's quite a lot of it around", he said. "Probably more so than the last three of four years."

Public Health England issued a warning after the rate of hospital admissions across the country rose.

Two motorcyclists, who were caught after police found helmet camera footage showing them driving at up to 118 mph, have been given eight-month jail sentences, suspended for two years.

Nicholas Pannell, 30, from Stenlake Terrace in Plymouth, and Joshua Illingworth, 29, from Venford Close, Galmpton, Torbay, both pleaded guilty to dangerous driving at a previous hearing.

At Plymouth Crown Court, they were also both disqualified from driving for a year and both given 180 hours community service.

Video footage of their speeding was found after one of them crashed.

A woman whose body was discovered in a property on Alphington Road in Exeter on Wednesday has been formally identified as Geraldine Mellor.

Officers said the body of the 32-year-old, from Exeter, was located by ambulance services who brought in police. Her next of kin have been informed.

A 36-year-old man from Exeter has been charged with murder in connection with the death and was remanded in custody after a magistrates' court appearance earlier.

He is due before Exeter Crown Court next week.

A nurse has been struck off after her abusive behaviour towards colleagues and dementia patients at a care home was exposed on a BBC Panorama documentary in 2016.

Susan Bagnall was working at the Clinton House Care Home in St Austell, Cornwall, where an undercover BBC reporter was working as a care assistant.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council said Bagnall's fitness to practise was impaired "by reason of your misconduct".

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a body was found in Exeter, police said.

Officers were called to an address on Mount Pleasant Road at about 05:50 to reports of a dead man.

The man has yet to be formally identified and his next of kin are being sought.

A spokesman said a 44-year-old man from Exeter had been arrested and was "currently in police custody, assisting with police inquiries."

Exeter councillors have put forward proposals to change parking charges around the city to reduce congestion.

The plans, put forward by the Place Scrutiny Committee, suggest the free car parks at Bromhams Farm and Turf Approach should start charging to discourage commuters from using them.

Councillors also recommended putting up the price of parking permits, including residents' season tickets, from £125 to £150, as they say these had fallen "disproportionally behind" daily rates.

The proposals will be put forward to other councillors for final approval.

A misconduct hearing has commenced against a Devon and Cornwall police officer accused of breaching professional standards, external.

More caution needs to be taken with plans to shake-up Cornwall's health and social care system, according to campaigners.

One recent inspection called for managers to have the "courage" to radically overhaul services.

Now plans are under way to reform the way health and social care are administered and delivered by moving to an "accountable care system".

The new system combines the budgets of providers, which bosses said was about everyone working together better, and not about privatisation.

But Deborah Hopkins - a nurse and Labour Party campaigner - said the new measures "shrink wrap" health and social care contracts into "little packages", the responsibility for which is taken away from national government and the NHS.

Ms Hopkins said this makes privatisation "extraordinarily easy".

The NHS and local authority bosses denied it would lead to privatisation, saying it would make better use of the money being spent.

It's still hoped a machine used to help a Plymouth teenage communicate with her family can be found after it was stolen from a car in the city.

Sixteen-year-old Miya Thirlby has cerebral palsy and is deaf. The machine tracks her eye movements and speaks the name of the picture she looks at.

Her dad, Paul Johnson, took to Twitter to appeal for its return after the machine was stolen from his car.

This led to a Just Giving appeal page being set up by Jamie Twite, which beat its target of £6,000 in less than 24 hours.

However, it is hoped the original machine might still be found or returned.

Mr Johnson said: "I'm not 100% sure the thief knew what it was. But with the press and everything around it, he must know now."
