A “very brave” young Australian pilot died in an accidental mid-air Spitfire crash over Cornwall, an inquest has heard.

Sqn Ldr Daniel Cremin (pictured), 25, was killed on 24 March 1942 when the plane he was flying collided with another during a training flight and crashed into fields near St Erth.

An inquest in Truro on Monday heard a metal detectorist found human remains while excavating in a field at Frythens Farm on 26 June last year and later DNA testing provided identification.

Coroner Barrie van den Berg said Sqn Ldr Cremin died as a result of a collision with another Spitfire piloted by a Sgt Norman, and an inquiry at the time made it "absolutely clear that the cause of his death was an accident".

Fellow Australian Sgt William Norman, in the other aircraft, was also killed.

Tracey Bowers, from the Ministry of Defence's Joint Casualty and Centre, which arranged the DNA testing on Sqn Ldr Cremin's remains, said it was a "really unusual" case because the centre usually dealt with remains recovered from France and Belgium.

She said: "The MoD's stance is people shouldn't go actively looking for remains because that's a war grave. But, if remains are discovered, then we will treat them with respect and dignity."

She added that Sqn Ldr Cremin "was a very brave young man".
