The number of reported crimes at this year's Boardmasters Festival was reduced by 75% compared to 2017's event, police have said.

Devon and Cornwall Police said there was a "significantly lower level of crime" with 15 thefts reported compared to 60 last year.

Supt Ian Drummond-Smith puts the "exceptionally low" numbers down to a security operation that was put in place by both the police and event organisers.

In total, 11 arrests were made for drugs supply offences.

One alleged dealer, a 25-year-old man from Surrey, has already attended court and the other 10 have been released under investigation pending forensic testing.

Police also added two thieves were arrested after a "short pursuit" on the A30 at Okehampton where 20 mobile phones - believed to be stolen - were found in a vehicle.

The men were released on bail.

  4. North Devon to 'tackle problem of overcrowding'published at 10:18 British Summer Time 13 August 2018

    Adrian Campbell, Environment Correspondent
    BBC Spotlight

North Devon is set to benefit taking part in a £3.5m EU-funded Anglo-French project to tackle the problems of overcrowding in areas of beautiful coastline.

The project is being led by Devon County Council and Exeter University and it aims to redirect some tourists inland and away from the beaches while still growing the local economy.

A large part of North Devon is designated as a Unesco biosphere in recognition of its very special coastline and countryside.

The beaches in the biosphere, which stretch from the edge of Dartmoor across much of North Devon and include the island of Lundy, are particularly popular with tourists but are also home to rare wildlife.

Devon is one of three biospheres to be successful in their bid. It is hoped the project, over the next three years, will encourage holidaymakers to enjoy inland wildlife trails or other experiences on offer to take pressure off “honeypot” locations along the coast

  13. No fines issued for breaching car smoking lawpublished at 08:22 British Summer Time 13 August 2018

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

No-one has been fined in Devon and Cornwall since the smoking ban in cars with under 18s inside was introduced.

It became illegal to smoke in a car, or other vehicle, with passengers under 18 in October 2015, to protect children and young people from the dangers of secondhand smoke.

Both the driver and the smoker could be fined £50. The law applies to every driver in England and Wales.

But a Freedom of Information request to Devon and Cornwall Police revealed since October 2015, the force has issued only three warnings to offenders in breach of the law.

All three instances came in 2016 when police officers issued an officer seen conditional offers, the replacement for fixed penalty notices, for the offence of smoking in a vehicle carrying a person under the age of 18.

  16. Turtle washes up on Cornish beachpublished at 07:28 British Summer Time 13 August 2018

    Johnny O'Shea
    BBC News Online

A 6.5ft (2m) long turtle washed up on Long Rock Beach near Penzance on Sunday.

The large leatherback turtle had visible slash marks on its back that may have been caused by a boat propeller.

Brendan Godley, chair in conservation science at the University of Exeter, Penryn Campus said the lesions "may have occurred after death".

"Only a very detailed postmortem will be able to ascertain if this was the case and, because of the state of decomposition, this may not be possible.”

The marine reptile, weighing about 600kg, is the largest and most widely distributed turtle in the world.

The shell is flexible and covered in a black leathery skin (hence the name leatherback) with seven ridges running the length of the back.

Leatherback turtles undertake an enormous migration from the temperate feeding waters to the tropical breeding waters, a journey of over 7,000km. These turtles are increasingly spending time around the coast of Britain because of warming water temperatures and the swarms of jellyfish they prey on.
