    Quote Message

We saw this white shape and colour - almost luminously white - just gliding thorough the waves. Ordinarily when you see a white cetacean you think: 'Ah, a Risso's dolphin.' But it was much to small, and when it surfaced it became clear it was a little porpoise with a little triangular fin... and it had a calf with it."

  19. Pressure from cyclists to open Devon bridge for bike routepublished at 07:31 British Summer Time 20 August 2018

    John Ayres
    BBC Spotlight

    cycle route

Cyclists in the South West are increasing their pressure to try to get a privately-owned bridge in Totnes opened so it can be used to connect up an important part of the National Cycle Network, external.

Cycle Route 2 runs from Dover to St Austell, but there is a gap between Newton Abbot and Totnes because of difficulties in finding a suitable way across the River Dart.

Cyclists said alternative options were "too expensive" when there's already a piece of infrastructure that could "possibly be shared" - the Bulliver Bridge, which is owned by the South Devon Railway.

The railway said it feared that opening the bridge up would create a "significant security risk" for its and its neighbours.

The bridge is 6.5ft (2m) wide and the normal standard expected for a shared space between cyclists and pedestrians is 9.8ft (3m).
