    Cornwall's under-18s boys golf team will return home from the national finals feeling "proud" after finishing fourth.

    The team was beaten in all three matches, having qualified for the event at Rockliffe Hall golf club in Durham by becoming south west champions in July.

    Earlier today they lost to Kent 7-2, with George Leigh and George Law picking up the points.

    Yorkshire successfully defended their title, external, seeing off Lincolnshire today to complete three wins from their three matches.

    Kent finished second, with Lincolnshire third and Cornwall fourth.

    The drive to get illegal tobacco off the streets has moved to Barnstaple today.

    Trading Standards officers have been in town urging people to report anyone selling cheap cigarettes which they say make it easier for children to buy and develop a habit.

    It's claimed the illegal tobacco trade has strong links with organised crime.

    Many of the people smuggling, distributing and selling it are also involved in drug dealing, money laundering and even terrorism.

    A fish that has become stuck in a piece of Lego has been caught off the Cornish coast.

    North Cornwall fisherman Ian Jepson posted a picture of the dogfish on social media.

    He said on Twitter: "#plasticpollution in real life at sea. Living a normal healthy life. A dogfish off #cornwall is caught with a #LEGO piece around it. We see and bring in plastic most days, but this is a first. #fishing#fishingforlitter"

    A man from Devon is now a world champion after his physically disabled rugby league (PDRL) side won the World Club Challenge.

    Anthony Seward makes a 450-mile round trip from Tiverton each week to train with the Warrington Wolves - the top side in the UK.

    Two years ago, he lost most of his fingers on his left hand in a workplace accident and struggled with the emotional, as well as the physical, injuries he suffered.

    Seward and his side claimed a 34-12 victory over their South Sydney Rabbitohs counterparts at Sydney’s 83,000-capacity ANZ Stadium.

    A 14-year-old boy rescued from a hole on Fistral Beach was trapped up to his neck in sand.

    The RNLI said the boy was buried with only his head visible, and was given oxygen as the weight of the sand on his chest was making it difficult for him to breathe.

    Lifeguards cleared the area on the Cornish beach and started digging in a bid to free the boy.

    Firefighters and a coastguard rescue team helped dig the boy out, who was eventually freed after 40 minutes.

    He was taken to a waiting ambulance but returned to the beach half-an-hour later to thank the lifeguards.

    This was a very tricky situation for the casualty and we had to take great care in attempting to free him due to the instability of the sand. Even after it had collapsed, the hole was still some 6ft (1.8m) deep and there was a very sheer, unstable shelf of sand right behind his head."

    A farm vehicle has been destroyed in a fire in a field in Devon.

    Fire crews from Chagford attended the blaze, external in South Zeal just before 11:00.

    On arrival, crews found the agricultural telehandler, a machine used for lifting, was well alight.

    The cause of the fire was accidental, said Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service. No-one was injured.

  16. Boy, 12, rides final part of 525-mile charity cyclepublished at 13:27 British Summer Time 30 August 2018

    A 12-year-old boy is on the final leg of a 525-mile journey visiting 75 fire stations.

    Andrew Impey has cycled from Hampshire and will reach Land's End in the coming days.

    He is raising money for the Fire Fighters charity, which supports firefighters and their families.

    He says the charity relies on public donations and he was inspired to help out of "respect" although is unsure where his love for the service came from.

    He said: "We don’t know how it started but the only connection we can think of is that I was born on 5 November.

    “They help us in the day-to-day running of the world. They do car crashes, water rescues, if your'e stuck at height.

    “You just need to be respectful of them because of all the stuff they do for you."

    Andrew has visited stations in Denmark, France and Spain and was made an honorary firefighter of the Fire Department of New York after visiting 51 stations.

    He said: "A lot of the firefighters from Grenfell that needed psychological help went to the charity, putting them into the recovery process."

    The cycle has raised more than £1000 so far and Andrew is due to reach Land's End on Sunday.

    It's been a tough morning for the Cornwall Under-18s boys golf team on the third day of the national finals.

    Having lost their matches on the first two days, today's match against Kent is a last opportunity to register a victory.

    However, they were beaten in all three foursomes matches, external at Rockcliffe Hall golf club in Durham.

    All is not lost though, with six singles points up for grabs this afternoon.

    Cornwall is one of just four teams to reach the finals, something they achieved by becoming south west champions in July.

    Today's other match is being contested by Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, with Yorkshire leading 2-1 at lunchtime.

    The cost of fuel has risen to a four-year high across the UK, according to new government figures., external

    They show the average price for a litre of unleaded fuel is £1.29 - the most expensive since August 2014.

    Meanwhile, average diesel prices are exceeding £1.33 per litre which last reached that level in September 2014.

    Steve Gooding, director of the RAC Foundation, said the latest price increases "will not have been lost on the millions of motorists travelling the length and breadth of the country in the past week or so heading to and from holiday destinations".

    These motorists have been filling up at a garage in Truro and have noticed the difference...

    Any damage to yachts involved in collisions with a cruise ship sailing into Dartmouth will be "thoroughly assessed and... be rectified", the cruise ship's owner says.

    The Saga Pearl Two clipped four yachts while manoeuvring on Wednesday morning.

    Owner Saga said the collisions occurred while the larger vessel was "under pilotage by the harbour master".

    It added: "During a manoeuvre she came into contact with four small leisure craft causing superficial damage. Nobody was hurt in the incident and the harbour office are making every effort to contact the owners of the yachts involved."

    Dart Harbour said an investigation was under way.

    It added: "Records from the incident are being collated and will be analysed in order to identify exactly why this occurred and what can be learnt."
