    Two kayakers and their dog were rescued on Saturday after they fell into difficulties near Challaborough Point in Devon, the RNLI said.

    The pair had left their kayak to scramble on to rocks before getting stuck and calling the coastguard.

    Two RNLI inshore lifeboats and the independent Hope Cove boat assisted in the rescue, which saw crew members having to enter the water and swim to the casualties due to the swell.

    Both people, their dog and their kayak were safely brought back to shore.

    A 33-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a woman died in a crash on the A38, police have said.

    It happened at about 18:30 on the eastbound carriageway near Leigham on Tuesday.

    A 54-year-old woman died after the Audi A4 she was driving was involved in a crash with a HGV truck.

    The man remains in police custody for questioning.

    Devon and Cornwall Police are appealing for witnesses.

    Two people were arrested after a "large" fight broke out in Exeter, police have said.

    It happened on Market Street at about 19:00 on Tuesday.

    A 42-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an accredited person after a Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) was assaulted.

    A 31-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of assault and for being in possession of a class-B drug.

    Both men remain in police custody and await questioning.

    An investigation is under way after a number of World War One artworks in Axminster were vandalised.

    Ten wooden 'Silent Soldier Silhouettes' were installed in the town in the run-up to the 100th anniversary of the end of the war last November.

    Since then, at least half have been damaged or have disappeared, including four which were placed around the town's war memorial, a former town mayor has said.

    Anyone with information is asked to contact Devon and Cornwall Police via 101.

    Two people have been rescued after getting stranded on a cliff in Cornwall on Tuesday evening, the RNLI said.

    One person was found on some rocks between Charlestown and Carlyon Bay, near St Austell, while a second person had climbed 40ft (12m) up the cliff and was stuck.

    The man on the rocks was picked up by the lifeboat.

    Crew members from RNLI Fowey then had to cut through a hedge and lower a team down to a gully over "dangerous, moving loose shale" with large lumps of rock sliding into the water to rescue the other.

    Both were not injured.

    A Cornish resident says the issue of litter in the county is an "institutional catastrophe" - as a campaign to make the Duchy litter-free takes place later.

    Gyllyngvase Beach in Falmouth will be covered with litter by Cornwall Council to highlight the problem.

    The council says it spends more than £5m a year tidying streets and beaches but these people in Redruth say some areas are still not clean enough...

    A new species of bacteria has been discovered and named after the place it was found - Cornwall.

    Staphylococcus cornubiensis was isolated from the skin of a 64-year-old man with cellulitis, external - a skin infection - who attended a primary care setting in Cornwall, researchers have said., external

    Further studies are now required to assess the prevalence of the species in humans as well as its potential presence in companion animals such as dogs.

    A man is in hospital after crashing his car into a tree on the A35, police have said.

    It happened earlier between Honiton and Axminster.

    The driver, a man in his 50s, has a head injury and has been taken to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.

    No other vehicles were involved, officers added.

    Devon and Cornwall Police remain on the scene while recovery work takes place.

    The road was closed earlier - but has since reopened.

    A 15-year-old boy has been arrested after a burglary in Plymouth, police have said.

    It happened at about 03:00 on 2 September at Byron Avenue in Manadon.

    Items including a laptop computer and an electronic tablet were taken as well as some keys.

    A Mercedes, registered to the property, was also taken and has since been recovered, Devon and Cornwall Police added.

    The boy has been released under investigation pending further inquiries.

    Anyone with information is asked to contact police via 101.

    Oldway Mansion in Paignton has been named by the Victorian Society as one of the top 10 endangered buildings in the country.

    The mansion, which was built as the private residence for the American inventor and sewing machine entrepreneur Isaac Singer, is based on the Palace of Versailles in France.

    Its future has been in doubt over the last few years after a development deal fell through and it has been lying empty.

    Paul Hawthorne, who is chair of the Friends of Oldway, says he "welcomes focus" on the mansion...

    It seems this summer's hot weather has seen more of us taking a plunge in the region's outdoor pools.

    It has been a record breaking year for Plymouth's Tinside Lido with more than 35,000 people taking a dip since May.

    Meanwhile 40,000 used the Mount Wise Swimming Pools, also in Plymouth, and Jubilee Pool in Penzance reached its 900-person capacity five times this year.

    Two tortoises are "unharmed" after a fire in a vivarium in Exeter, firefighters have said.

    The small fire - involving a light-bulb and sawdust - started at about 18:30 at a flat on King Street on Tuesday.

    Fire crews extinguished it using a saucepan of water.

    The cause of the fire was accidental, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service added.

    A section of a popular Cornish beach will be covered in rubbish later as part of a campaign to make the Duchy litter-free.

    At 10:00 Cornwall Council will be covering part of Gyllyngvase Beach in Falmouth with refuse - before sweeping it up and removing it - to highlight the problem.

    The local authority said it spends more than £5m a year tidying streets and beaches with an army of up to 200 workers covering 40,000 miles annually – almost twice the distance around the world.

    Despite this effort and the threat of a £150 fine for littering, nearly 60% of people in Cornwall say they are not happy about how clean their streets are.

    The Litterless Cornwall campaign will encourage people to take a pledge online to "leave only footprints".

    A woman has died in a crash between a car and a HGV lorry on the A38 in Plymouth.

    The 54-year-old driver of a silver Audi A4 was travelling eastbound at the Leigham/Estover interchange at about 18:35 on Tuesday.

    She was given first aid but died at the scene.

    Devon and Cornwall Police said her next-of-kin had been informed and were being supported by a family liaison officer.

    The road was closed for several hours while officers investigated.
