A milestone will be reached later as the final piece of steel in the roof of Plymouth’s new museum and history centre will be put in place.

It will mark the construction of the building reaching its highest point.

The multimillion-pound project has run over budget, with a year of construction still to go.

The centre will open in time for celebrations of the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower from the city to America.

    Quote Message

We're putting in the last piece of steel and everybody that comes to the ceremony will have the opportunity to sign that and it will be craned into position. It's just a celebration, it's a milestone for the project."

Cornwall's first public road speed hillclimb will take place this weekend.

Ninety cars and drivers from across the UK will descend on Watergate Bay, external for the two-day competition which is expected to attract thousands of spectators.

Competitors will tackle the 720m course along the B3276 coast road between Padstow and Newquay.

The event will be the first to take place on a closed public road after a change in the law in 2017 now enables the suspension of the Road Traffic Act for motorsport events.

The event will be sanctioned by the Motor Sports Association (MSA) which governs the sport in the UK.

It's hoped this race could become an annual fixture.

    Quote Message

A few years ago, this was just an idea and now this weekend, after many months of hard work, it becomes a reality. Cornwall is a fantastic place for motorsport and has a very healthy scene which tends to hide itself away, so Watergate Bay is effectively bringing motorsport to the people."

Hundreds of passengers had to be taken off a brand new GWR train when it broke down on its way from Penzance to Paddington.

The 14:00 Hitachi 800 service came to a halt at 17:15 just north of Exeter on Thursday, and was stranded there for six hours until about 400 passengers were taken off the train by ladder and transferred to another which took them back to Exeter.
