  4. Callington 'concrete cancer' homes to be demolishedpublished at 10:32 British Summer Time 20 September 2018

    Hayley Westcott
    BBC News Online

People living in 15 properties in Cornwall are being re-housed after tests revealed a severe case of "concrete cancer" - making them unsafe to live in.

Mundic blocks - used to build the homes - are made up of concrete mixed with mining waste, and minerals in them turn to sulphuric acid when water penetrates the concrete - causing the deterioration and weakening of a building.

The blocks were used from the 1900s until the 1960s and were commonly referred to as having a "concrete cancer".

Housing officers were alerted to the issue after reports of ongoing damp by the tenants at two of the affected properties in Urban Terrace.

Cornwall Council said extra surveys revealed problems in a further 13 houses.

Ten of the homes are under the ownership of Cornwall Housing and five are privately owned.

For safety reasons, the homes will be demolished once all are vacated, Cornwall Council added.

My sympathies go out to those affected residents. While their safety is our utmost priority, I appreciate that losing your home and having to relocate is incredibly distressing and this must be heartbreaking. We will do our utmost to minimise the impact by finding them suitable permanent homes as close as possible to their current residence if they so wish, or an alternative area of their choice.

  6. Torpoint Ferry service reduced due to metal pulley problempublished at 10:06 British Summer Time 20 September 2018

    Hayley Westcott
    BBC News Online

There is currently just one ferry in operation between Torpoint and Devonport due to work to replace a metal pulley.

Ferry bosses say the pulley, known as the sheave, takes a "constant battering" from the chain as the ferry moves and this has been exacerbated by the bad weather conditions.

They added not replacing it would mean the "chain would jump around and cause much more damage".

A team is currently on site fixing the problem and operators say the service should be back up to two ferries soon.

The third ferry remains out of service for a refit.
