  5. A382's 'Golden Highway' given support of councillorspublished at 17:24 British Summer Time 17 October 2018

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Full support to widen a road that will be a "golden thread through the heart of the district" has been given by Teignbridge councillors.

It's believed the £30m "Golden Highway" scheme will improve the main road between Newton Abbot and Drumbridges near Trago Mills.

Devon County Council's development management committee last year agreed proposals to upgrade the A382, and funding has been secured for the work to improve journey times and safety.

In June, following more than three years of negotiations, the council issued compulsory purchase orders for land associated with widening and improvements planned for the A382.

However as there have been a limited number of objections, a public inquiry, expected to take place in spring 2019, is likely to be needed to determine the fate of the land.

This road will be a golden thread through the centre of Teignbridge. This road really matters to us and is the heartbeat to Teignbridge. Make no mistake, we need to reiterate the powerful desire to get on with this. This road will cut down travel time massively, improve the road, and the economic improvement that we will get from that will be huge, as having a top quality road will make such a different to us.

Councillor Jeremy Christophers, Teignbridge District Council

  8. Recycling rates drop in Devon except for east of countypublished at 16:50 British Summer Time 17 October 2018

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Recycling rates across Devon dropped by 1.7% in the last year, according to figures from the Devon Authorities Strategic Waste Committee.

They show the rate has dipped to 54% in 2017/2018, which is down from 55.7% in 2016/17.

A report by the committee blamed the reduction on Household Waste Recycling Centres no longer being able to recycle mattresses and carpets, and the fact that only higher grade wood can now be recycled.

However, in East Devon, recycling rates have bucked the national trend.

The figures there show there has been an 8.1% increase in recycling in 2017/18 - up to 54.2%.

That's the highest ever figure East Devon District Council has recorded.

Simon Blevins, 26, Richard Roberts, 36, and Rich Loizou, 31, became the first UK anti-fracking protesters to be sent to prison, after climbing on lorries at Cuadrilla's site in Lancashire.

Court of Appeal judges ruled they should be released from prison and instead imposed two-year conditional discharges.

The judgement was met with applause and singing from supporters in the court.

Blevins, from Sheffield, Loizou, from Devon, and Roberts, of London, were jailed after being convicted of public nuisance at Preston Crown Court in September.

Lord Chief Justice Lord Burnett said to jail them immediately was "manifestly excessive".

    Quote Message

In our judgment, the appropriate sentence which should have been imposed... was a community order with a significant requirement of unpaid work.

    Quote Message

But these appellants have been in prison for six weeks. As a result, and only for that reason, we have concluded that the appropriate sentence now is a conditional discharge for two years.
