The GMB union says it "wants answers" about the package that was offered to save Appledore Shipyard.

It comes as news was announced earlier that the yard near Bideford will close in March 2019.

GMB and sister union Unite staged a mass rally to save the shipyard and handed in a petition with nearly 10,000 signatures to the Ministry of Defence and Babcock this week.

They were calling on them to save the shipyard which is "vital to both the local community and UK shipbuilding".

Babcock International says the decision to close the yard was a "difficult" one and has stressed it will offer relocation opportunities for the 200 employees affected.

Babcock International says the closure of Appledore Shipyard was a "difficult decision"

It was announced on Thursday the historic shipyard in north Devon is to close despite a campaign to keep it open.

Thousands of people joined a march recently in support of the yard and signed a petition which was handed to the government asking ministers to help.

In a statement, the yard company said its focus is now "firmly on its workforce and its determination to protect their employment within the business".

"To that end, the company will offer relocation opportunities for all 199 Appledore employees at other Babcock facilities, 140 of whom are already on short-term redeployment to its Devonport operations."

It added it "very much regrets" the closure and recognises the impact it will have on its "dedicated and professional workforce".

The company will now engage in a consultation period, working closely with its employees and their trade union representatives.

The end of an era has been announced in north Devon with news that Appledore Shipyard is to close.

Workers at the yard near Bideford were told on Thursday morning it will close by the end of March.

It's believed about 200 jobs are at stake, although the yard company Babcock has indicated that many or all of those workers will be offered the chance to redeploy to the sister yard at Devonport in Plymouth.

The threat to the yard has been hanging over staff ever since major work on the UK's new aircraft carriers came to an end and the last of a series of offshore patrol vessels for Ireland was finished.

Pressure on the government to guarantee Royal Navy or Royal Fleet Auxiliary work for the yard has so far come to nothing.

    Ben Woolvin
BBC South West Home Affairs correspondent

Medicinal cannabis products can now be legally prescribed to some patients across the UK for the first time.

One businessman thinks the change could mean a new opportunity for Cornish farmers.

The change in the law means specialist doctors will be able to offer cannabis-based products for a limited range of conditions.

Saul Meskin has a business in Truro selling cannabis-derived CBD oil and he's convinced about the "massive economic opportunity" that could come from the benefits of cannabis...

Meanwhile, MP for St Ives, Derek Thomas thinks it's right people with medical needs should be helped.

However, he says he's "nervous" about producing cannabis in the county and if he wants to see the agricultural sector grow, "I'd like to see it grow elsewhere".

    Workers travelling to London

The Ministry of Defence has offered a potential lifeline for workers at Appledore Shipyard.

The Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson has offered to bring forward a £60m programme of works for Devonport Dockyard, which in turn could provide more work for staff based at Appledore in north Devon.

But yard owners Babcock, say this alone still will not be enough to secure the long term future of the site.

GMB sources say it's a step in the right direction and a partial win.

Earlier in the week, supporters and workers of the 'Save Appledore Shipyard' petition travelled to London to speak to politicians.

There's certainly some fear with passengers of what next year looks like as far as travel's concerned. There's some specific areas like pet passports - which may or may not exist next year.
