  10. Fire service on-call shortage leads to safety concernspublished at 09:52 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2018

    Tamsin Melville
    Political Reporter, BBC Radio Cornwall

An urgent need for more on-call firefighters across the South West is forcing services to look at measures such as reduced crewing of appliances or shorter hours.

In Devon and Somerset, an average of 14% of pumps are unavailable at any one time due to crewing shortages.

On one occasion this year, 40% of pumps were off the run.

Now the service is piloting a scheme allowing on-call appliances to attend incidents with three firefighters when four are not available.

But the Devon and Somerset Fire Brigades Union (FBU) is advising its members to boycott this.

James Leslie Devon is from the FBU...

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said it had already completed a pilot and staff would be specially trained.

  18. Tamar Bridge car toll cost could rise from £1.50 to £2published at 08:46 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2018

    Richard Whitehouse
    Local Democracy Reporting Service

A formal application is set to be made to increase the cost of crossing from Cornwall into Devon by 33%.

    Bridge

Cornwall Council’s cabinet will be asked to approve a bid to the Department for Transport (DfT) to increase Tamar Bridge tolls and the cost of using the Torpoint ferry by a third.

It currently costs £1.50 for cars to cross the bridge or use the ferry. However, under the new charges, it would jump to £2.

In addition, Cornwall Council and Plymouth City Council – which are jointly responsible for managing the bridge and ferry – are set to ask the DfT to allow them to carry out annual reviews of the charges and increase them in line with inflation without having to go to the government for approval.

The two councils leaders are also going to ask the DfT for more funding for the maintenance, improvements and operation of the bridge which would “reduce the burden on users”.

The report to Cornwall Council’s cabinet said stated that the increase was needed because in the last year the bridge has been operating at a deficit.

It added that expenditure had exceeded income and, as a result, reserves were said to be “depleted”.

Explaining the increase in costs, the report highlighted inflation costs, growth in the capital programme and increased maintenance on the bridge and ferry.

The report also stated that the level of traffic had also grown relatively slowly and, as a result, so had income.

Cornwall Council’s cabinet is to meet on Tuesday.
