    BBC Radio Cornwall

A Russian cargo ship that was grounded off Cornwall has been officially detained after surveyors from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency found it needed repairs.

The 16,000-tonne bulk carrier Kuzma Minin, which grounded off Gyllyngvase Beach in Falmouth a week before Christmas, has been deemed unseaworthy.

The vessel, which had 18 crew members on board but no cargo, was refloated in a "tricky and delicate" operation at high tide and brought round to Falmouth Bay.

Gifts have been delivered to its crew ahead of the Russian Orthodox Christmas, and a Falmouth harbour authority spokesman said they were all comfortable, with enough food and water.

  3. Football: 'Schoolboy defending' costs Truro Citypublished at 12:08 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2019

    Brent Pilnick
    BBC Sport

Truro City manager says his side's poor defending was to blame as they were beaten 5-3 away at Welling United in National League South.

The White Tigers found themselves 4-0 down early in the second half before Tyler Harvey scored twice and Nick Hurst got one as Truro lost for the third time in four games. It leaves them four points above the relegation zone.

"At the end of the day, we defended appallingly, finding ourselves 4-0 down and 5-1 down," Robinson told BBC Radio Cornwall.

"You can only describe it as schoolboy defending. There were individual errors in a game where really we've had as many chances, if not more chances, than the opposition.

"We scored three goals away from home to a really good quality side and got nothing to show for it."

The jury was told that Mr Gale has been found unfit to plead to a murder charge as he suffered from paranoid schizophrenia.

Judge Peter Johnson said the role of the jury in the case was not to find Mr Gale guilty or not guilty, but to decide whether "he committed the act as charged".

    BBC News Online

A dog had a lucky escape after falling over a cliff near Maenporth, Falmouth, over the weekend.

Falmouth and Porthoustock Coastguard Rescue Teams were called to West Bay on Friday afternoon and discovered the dog, called Thea, had fallen about 15ft (4.5m) and was "precariously balanced on a very small ledge with around a 60 ft (18m) drop below her".

A rope rescue technician was lowered and she was secured and placed in a special animal rescue bag and recovered to the cliff top, they said.

  19. Plymouth City Council pays £750 for botched plumbing fixpublished at 09:05 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2019

    Ed Oldfield
    Local Democracy Reporting Service

A disabled woman was left without regular use of a toilet and shower for nine weeks when a bathroom refit went wrong in Plymouth.

    Council house

The work carried out by a contractor on behalf of Plymouth City Council was so poor the bathroom flooded and a loose pipe sprayed hot water in a child’s face, the authority was told.

The toilet and shower were fitted incorrectly, the tiling was poor quality and an officer later described the work as one of the worst bathroom installations they had ever seen.

As a result of the case, the council removed the contractor from its list, paid the woman £500 compensation and changed the way it oversees work.

The Local Government Ombudsman, which oversees standards, carried out an investigation and upheld the woman’s complaint against the council.

It said the authority had agreed to pay the woman a further £250 for being without a bathroom for nine weeks and for a delay in handling her complaint.

The council said it had "worked hard to resolve the complainants issues and have reviewed our procedures to make sure this does not happen again".

  20. Villagers losing patience with holiday park sewage leakspublished at 08:48 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2019

    Sophie Pierce
    BBC Radio Devon

Villagers living near a well-known Devon holiday park say their lives are being blighted by regular sewage leaks.

A lake in Chudleigh Knighton has been frequently polluted by sewage from Finlake Holiday Park. Whenever a pumping station at the park overflows, sewage comes down the stream and into the lake.

The park has already received a formal warning from the Environment Agency but now wants planning permission for a multimillion-pound expansion to build more lodges.

The parish council said no planning permission should be given until the sewage issue is dealt with, but villagers, including James Rooth, said they were starting to lose patience...

Haulfryn, Finlake's parent company, said it was treating the issue "extremely seriously".

    It said it had:

    • Carried out surveys between August and October, followed by a park-wide survey in December
    • Had a tanker on 24-hour standby to deal with discharges
    • Was investing a significant amount of money, resource and time to resolve the issue
