Old artist's impression of Old Forde House

Archaeologists are hoping to discover more about the prehistoric, Roman and medieval history of a Devon building used by kings and the county's most important families.

A team led by University of Exeter students hopes to reveal more about Old Forde House, external in Newton Abbot, which is currently home to Teignbridge District Council.

    Old Forde House

Originally built in the 16th Century, King Charles I stayed in the house in 1625 on his way to Plymouth, while Oliver Cromwell and Colonel Fairfax took shelter there during the English Civil War.

The geophysical survey, which takes place today, will use state-of-the-art equipment to try to discover previously unknown buildings or structures buried beneath the house and in the grounds.

    Quote Message

We hope this research will give us a much better understanding of how Newton Abbot developed, and the buried archaeological features within the grounds of Old Forde House. We will be using equipment which measures variations in the Earth’s magnetic field and changes in the electrical resistance of the ground to see if we can find medieval, Roman and prehistoric features underground."

  6. Concerns over no-deal Brexit ferry contractspublished at 08:32 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January 2019

    BBC Spotlight

The leader of Plymouth City Council has raised concerns about plans to increase the number of ferries running from the city in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

It was announced last month that Brittany Ferries has been awarded a £46m slice of government contracts to help ease any congestion if Britain leaves the EU without an agreement.

But Tudor Evans says they need more information from the government about what the future holds.

    Quote Message

The ferries might be in place, but all the other stuff around it - paperwork and bureaucracy and all those sorts of things - we are preparing but what we can't say is that we're preparing to the best of our ability because the government is not contacting us."

Tudor Evans, Leader of Plymouth City Council

    ferry

However the company says it - and the city of Plymouth - can cope with the extra demand.

    Quote Message

We've read some scare stories about additional lorries clogging up Plymouth city centre... but if we're increasing capacity by 50% that's maybe up to 100 or so lorries per week. That shouldn't cause the chaos that some have suggested might happen. There's lots of work to do but we have the infrastructure, we have the ships, we have the partners working with us, and we are going to deliver on this contract."

    Nigel Wonnacott, Brittany Ferries
