The Police Federation is warning that police and the public are being exposed to "increased risk" because more than three-quarters of front-line officers often or always work alone.

The federation said a survey of 18,000 constables, sergeants and inspectors in England and Wales found that almost 90% didn't feel they had enough officers to manage demand.

In a statement, Devon and Cornwall Police said it acknowledges the "stressful work" that its officers and staff do and it's "committed to helping officers manage any impact on their mental health and well-being".

"There is currently a resiliency pilot being run offering a day workshop to staff and officers under particular stress at this time," it added.

A large owl native to India which escaped from a Cornish sanctuary after strong winds damaged his enclosure has been brought home safe and well.

Owners of Zig the Bengal eagle owl had warned last Wednesday that he would probably die unless he was recaptured as he was not used to fending for himself, having been rescued eight years ago.

He fled the Cornish Birds of Prey Centre, external near Wadebridge overnight when the side of his aviary blew down.

After he had been spotted at a farm nearby his owners told the BBC they managed to "keep him moving until he was tired out" and recaptured him on Sunday.
