  3. Call for emergency by-law to protect fishpublished at 11:24 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2019

    Richard Whitehouse
    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Calls have been made for an emergency by-law to be introduced which would limit the size of nets used to fish for bass in Cornwall.

The request has been made after concerns fishermen have been using small mesh nets, resulting in smaller bass being caught.

This could lead to a lack of the fish reaching maturity, impacting the overall bass stocks.

In 2015, new restrictions were put in place by the EU which mean that bass must be at least 42cm (17 inches) to be caught to address a serious fall in stocks.

An extraordinary meeting of the Cornwall Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (CIFCA) will be held on Friday to consider the request.

I can sympathize with them on certain levels and we do try to police the music level, but the constraints seem to be quite high. I feel that the legislation regarding music levels is wrong.

The national shrine to Boniface is in the town's Catholic church and now the Boniface Link Association want him recognised as the county's patron saint.

Councillor Nick Way will put a motion to Devon councillors later - calling on them to support the campaign.

Tor2 was set up in 2010 as a joint venture between the council and what is now the Kier Group and since then has had responsibility for recycling services.

However, the company has not not met its targets for recycling rates and the current contract expires next year.

The council will consider five options at a meeting later - including keeping it as it is or having the service run by a company that is wholly owned by the council.

  11. Ferrets unharmed in Devon shed firepublished at 08:45 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2019

    Hayley Westcott
    BBC News Online

A garden shed has been damaged in a fire in Devon, but three ferrets have been saved from the blaze.

Crews were called to Red House Close, in Chudleigh Knighton, at about 04:00.

The occupant had used a garden hose before firefighters arrived which resulted in three ferrets and fuels within the shed to be unaffected, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said.

The shed had 40% fire damage.

The cause is believed to be an accidental ignition caused by ashes from a previous fire being stored in a waste bag within the shed.

  12. Hospital scan waits 'too long' but pharmacy service betterpublished at 08:40 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2019

    Jenny Walrond
    Health Correspondent, BBC Spotlight

People are still waiting too long for scans at Plymouth's Derriford Hospital, according to a report.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) said the trust has failed to comply with a warning notice from an August inspection telling it to take urgent action to improve its diagnostic imaging service.

However, it does add that University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust has made "significant improvements" to its pharmacy service - which was another concern the CQC had in its last inspection.

Mary Cridge is from the CQC...

The trust said staff have been working hard to make the required improvements and it's good to see the inspectors recognise the progress that has been made - particularly in pharmacy.

It added some of the changes needed relate to capacity and culture but these take time "because they depend on recruiting new staff, implementing new ways of working and changing attitudes and behaviours".

Work is expected to start next week to repair a slipway at a popular Devon beach damaged in a storm last year.

Contractors have been appointed to carry out the work at Paignton Beach for Torbay Council after the slipway was left badly damaged by Storm Callum last October.

Torbay's elected mayor Gordon Oliver allocated up to £35,000 to rebuild the concrete structure which was broken up after being battered by large waves.

Councillor Mrs Lewis, Conservative, Roundham with Hyde, said: "Paignton is a tourist town and can't have part of the promenade and the whole of the slipway fenced off during the summer season. It gives the wrong message to locals, tourists and day visitors."
