NHS bosses were warned against contacting a doctor who was on sick leave with work stress, an inquest heard.
Image source, Family pictureFather-of-two Dr Alastair Watt, 45, was found dead near his home in North Tawton, Devon in December 2017.
The diabetes consultant at Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust had suffered a severe head injury while cycling in April 2016.
After being in hospital for three weeks, his mental health had deteriorated and he had been signed off work with stress, the inquest at County Hall in Exeter heard.
Occupational health had advised Dr Watt’s managers against having work-based discussions with him while he was on sick leave in November 2017.
Catherine Smith, manager of acute services at the trust, told the inquest at County Hall in Exeter that she had replied to an email from him while he was on sick leave.
“I wanted to get a view from him how he wanted to proceed, she said.
“I was mindful that I did not do anything to create more stress.
“I did not think it would have an impact.”
Dr Watt, who the inquest heard earlier was “passionate” about his job, was concerned that he was letting short-staffed colleagues down.
His GP wife, Ruth Watt said he had suffered from work stress which got worse after the accident, but managers had not believed he was overworked.
The inquest continues.

BBC News OnlineSlurry is leaking onto a road after a crash between two tractors in Camelford.
Police said one of the tractors was pulling a muck spreader "containing a substantial amount of slurry".
The muck spreader is on its side on the B3266 between Sir James Smith School and Atlantic Motors and "its contents are leaking" according to police.
Emergency services are on the scene and there are no reported injuries.
A police spokesman said: "People are advised to avoid the area…and possibly keep their windows closed."

BBC News OnlineA 26-year-old man has been arrested at Heathrow Airport in connection with a hit-and-run in Plymouth that is being treated as attempted murder.
Police launched an investigation after a 25-year-old man sustained "potentially life-changing injuries" when he was deliberately struck by a car on Stuart Road, external - in the Stoke area of the city - at about 01:30 on 27 November.
Two men from Plymouth were previously arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
A 35-year-old man has since been released under investigation pending further inquiries and a 40-year-old man has been released on police bail until 21 March.
The man arrested at Heathrow Airport remains in police custody where he awaits questioning, Devon and Cornwall Police said.

In Paignton, Midvale Road is closed in both directions between the A3022 Totnes Road and Curledge Street.
The road is expected to remain closed for some time.
Earlier, a woman was arrested on suspicion of murder after the body of a man in his 70s was found in a property there.

The A39 is expected to reopen in the next hour after an earlier crash between a car and a coach, police have said.
Officers were called to the road near Winnards Perch at about 07:30 but both vehicles have now been recovered from the scene.
The driver of the car and a passenger - both in their 80s - remain in hospital.
The driver has "potentially life-threatening injuries" while the passenger is not believed to have sustained serious injuries, officers added.

A gas pipe upgrade scheme costing £165,000 is due to start in Budleigh Salterton next month.
Wales and West Utilities said the work will involve upgrading 3280ft (1km) of old metal pipes to new long-lasting plastic ones.
Work is due to start on 18 March and be completed by June.
It's part of a £9.3m investment in the local gas network in Exeter and the surrounding area during 2019.

The Mare and Foal Sanctuary in Devon is appealing for the county's horse lovers to take on some of its animals.
The sanctuary, which has its main office based in Newton Abbot, says it's nearly full and has 38 ponies ready to be rehomed.
It says it can't take any more ponies in - until it frees up some room in the stables.

Primary school children in Plymouth are getting hands on with science and engineering this week at Plymouth's University Technical College in Devonport.
The Big Bang Fair aims to introduce young children to so-called STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and inspire them to eventually go on and study them at college and university.
Teachers hope that engaging youngsters at an early age will help plug a growing skills shortage.

Cornwall is among some of the worst places for breaching air quality regulations, according to data released by Friends of the Earth.
The environmental campaign group's figures have Tideford and Launceston on a top 10 list of places for poor air.
With a total of 121 locations across the South West failing to meet air quality objectives, Friends of the Earth is campaigning for more "Clean Air Zones", external and improved infrastructure to support safe cycling and walking.

Local Democracy Reporting ServiceA bold vision to create 12,000 new homes in Exeter over the next 20 years has officially been adopted by Exeter City Council.
The 20-year "Liveable Exeter" vision gives the council a chance to shape the way development takes place in the city.
The vision is concentrating on the property crisis while trying to solve transport challenges facing the city - proposing a need for residents to ditch cars and walk and cycle instead.

Councillor Pete Edwards, leader of the council, said: "This is a very exciting vision for the future and I commend it to anyone.
"It is full of ideas about where we are going and I hope that everyone can support this."
Some major arterial routes, including the Exe Bridges roundabout and Topsham Road, are shown to be vastly different and partially pedestrianised while artist's impressions show how some of the city's busiest areas could be transformed into leafy, pedestrianised neighbourhoods.
Councillors voted to adopt the vision on Tuesday.
