More than 800 workers will receive a pay boost after Cornwall Council was awarded Living Wage Foundation accreditation.
The move will see workers across the county receive an extra £10m in their pay packets over the next four years.
The difference is currently £9 per hour compared to the UK’s minimum wage of £8.21, and the employees affected will see an average salary rise of 7.7%.
The council started paying its directly employed staff the Foundation Living Wage rate in 2015.
Now, the scheme is being expanded to include the council’s group of companies and contractors the authority directly employs.
Quote MessageIt is fantastic to become an accredited Foundation Living Wage authority. It clearly shows our commitment to helping support our lowest paid members of staff. We now hope other businesses across Cornwall will follow this example when they are able to. It is good for businesses as well as employers, and will help end Cornwall’s reputation as a low-wage economy."
Councillor Julian German, Deputy Leader of Cornwall Council
A mental health respite service in Cornwall will stay open after NHS Kernow and Cornwall Council agreed to continue finding it "for up to three years"., external
It follows a public outcry over plans to withdraw funding and close Sanctuary House in Menheniot.
The five-bed facility, also known as Oakleigh House, offers respite support for people with mental health challenges, and has helped more than 200 people over the last 17 years.
NHS Kernow and Cornwall Council have said they will extend the contract to "further understand what impact the service has on people's health and wellbeing".
Quote MessageAs responsible commissioners we listened to what people had to say about the decision to no longer fund this service, and have now agreed to extend the contract for up to three years. This will allow us to really explore the impact the service has on people's health and wellbeing... As part of our longer term plans to increase investment in mental health services we will be keen to find out how respite services such as those currently provided by Sanctuary House help prevent mental health crisis."
Dr Iain Chorlton, Chairman, NHS Kernow

Planning permission has been granted for a new £78m road which will provide an improved link between St Austell and the A30.
A full planning application for the new route, which will run between Stenalees and the A30 at Roche, went before Cornwall Council's strategic planning committee on Thursday morning.
Councillors were told the new road would provide major benefits to businesses and residents in St Austell and the surrounding area - as well as helping Roche, Bugle and Stenalees which are all currently used as a route from Cornwall's main road to St Austell.
Planning officer Matt Stephenson told the committee there had been "widespread support" for the plans from the business community and local residents.
Some councillors raised concerns about objections which had been lodged by minerals firm Imerys but were reassured that discussions were ongoing with the company and were told that Imerys was supporting the new road.
The planning application was approved as set out with conditions unanimously.

Engineers say it could take three weeks to complete repair work on the ancient Gunnislake bridge - although a firm estimate is due to made next week.
Local business owners say they're worried about the impact the prolonged closure will have on trade.
The bridge over the River Tamar was closed on Tuesday after a car hit it, causing substantial damage.
A diversion of about 30 miles is in place while repairs are carried out.
Quote MessageUp to 50 people I've had to cancel. We've got a huge beer festival Easter weekend and we've got a lot of support from people in Tavistock. We put a big advert in the local paper last Thursday and had a lot of trade from that. Now, I've got people ringing up saying they don't want to go through Horsebridge."

A gas leak, which led to the Plymouth College of Art being evacuated, has been fixed by engineers.
Wales and West Utilities were called to the Charles Street area of the city on Thursday morning, after contractors damaged a gas pipe running beneath the road.
A spokesman for the company said engineers had been working "as safely and quickly as possible" to mend the pipe.
All the occupants of the college have now been allowed to return to the building.
Quote MessageOur engineers have worked as safely and as quickly as possible, and have now stopped the leak. As a precaution, the nearby Plymouth College of Art took the decision to evacuate the building, but all occupants have now been allowed to return. We appreciate that working on roads such as these is not ideal, but it was important that we fix this leak now, in order to continue to provide a safe and reliable supply of gas to homes and businesses in the area."

A petrol station will be back on the main road into Torquay after two were bypassed by the new South Devon Highway.
Torbay Council has given conditional approval for the new facility on Newton Road at Lowe's Bridge, near the junction with Hele Road close to the Bridge Retail Park.
The previous filling station on the route into the town centre closed in 2003 and was replaced by a car wash and cafe.
Now, a developer will replace the buildings and underground tanks at the site to create a new 24/7 filling station with shop, cash machine and car wash.
The £110m South Devon Highway between Newton Abbot and Torquay opened in December 2015.
It provided a new route for the A380, bypassing the village of Kingskerswell as well as the two Harvest and Esso filling stations on the old route.

At about 13:00 the same day, a different elderly woman in the Crownhill area was visited by a man who stated there was an issue with her water supply.

The suspect is described as a white male, aged in his early 20s, of average build and height, with no facial hair. He was wearing a high-visibility jacket and hard hat.
Witnesses are asked to contact Devon and Cornwall Police via 101.
