Controversial plans for a pool house at the iconic Burgh Island Hotel have been dropped.

The hotel was granted conditional permission for the plans by South Hams District Council, with hotel bosses saying the "innovative and exciting design" would have a positive effect on local tourism.

However, about 2,000 people signed a petition against the building, with criticisms saying it was a "carbuncle" and it would "desecrate" an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (ANOB).

The hotel, on an island off south Devon, is currently undergoing a multi-million pound renovation after being sold last year.

It is renowned for its 1930s Art Deco features and the place where Agatha Christie wrote two of her books.
