  17. Cornwall Council rejects changes to homespublished at 10:41 British Summer Time 11 June 2019

    Richard Whitehouse
    Local Democracy Reporting Service

A bid to alter the design of homes to be built on a controversial site has been rejected by Cornwall council's planning committee.

Linden Homes had applied to Cornwall Council to change the designs of seven of the homes on its development of 28 at Swanpool Road in Falmouth.

The council had originally refused planning permission for the overall development but that was overturned on an appeal to the planning inspectorate.

Work has already started on the site, which also includes 11 affordable homes, but the developer was seeking permission to increase the size of seven of the homes.

Falmouth Town Council objected to the changes saying that it would lead to over-massing and said it also impacted the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

Local Cornwall councillor for the area Alan Jewell said there had been a large number of objections.

He said the homes would be visible from points "all over the town" and it was disappointing that the developer was not willing to stick with what it has permission for.

    Quote Message

This further development by default is harmful to the landscape and that is why I would not support this. It is a step too far."

  20. Council's wildflower verge cutting 'an act of vandalism'published at 08:20 British Summer Time 11 June 2019

    BBC Spotlight

A conservationist has described Devon County Council's cutting of an "ancient" wildflower verge as an act of "vandalism".

The local authority said the the 200m strip between Buckfastleigh and Totnes has been cut for health and safety reasons.

    Verge

But Donna Cox, the co-founder of the Moor Meadows community group, said the work has been done at the wrong time of year - for the third year in a row which could destroy the habitat forever.

    Quote Message

If things like early purple orchids are cut repeatedly year-on-year, eventually they will just die out. This is probably a remnant (of an) ancient meadow verge because of the number of species within it."
