  5. Twenty-one cases of Covid-19 in police in four-weekspublished at 11:17 Greenwich Mean Time 13 November 2020

There have been 21 confirmed cases of coronavirus among police officers and staff in Devon and Cornwall during a four-week period leading up to 28 October.

It comes as the force reveals a rise in the number of officers being spat at by people who then claim to have Covid-19.

Assistant Chief Constable Glen Mayhew says no officer should be assaulted while protecting the public.

"It is really tough that we're asking police and other emergency service personnel to put themselves in harms way to protect the public.

"And it's completely unacceptable that in doing so they face increased risk through people assaulting them and even worse at the moment, through spitting."

On Wednesday a man was jailed for six months for spitting at a police officer and a member of the public.

  6. Drive to fill 1,000 vacant Cornwall care jobspublished at 10:05 Greenwich Mean Time 13 November 2020

Cornwall Council is trying to fill 1,000 care sector jobs.

Rob Rotchell, cabinet member for adults, said the council wanted to hear from people who might not have considered a career in care before.

With the number of people out of work or being made redundant as a result of the Covid pandemic the council is encouraging people thinking of a new line of work to find out more about working in care.

Councillor Rotchell said: "We particularly welcome those who have worked in retail, hospitality and leisure-based roles. There are many roles for those with less or no previous experience."

He said with increasing demand for care services as a result of the pandemic the council wants to fill the vacancies so it can continue to provide help and support to the most vulnerable.

He added as well as newcomers to the care sector the council also wants to hear from those who previously worked in care and want to return.

A new website has been launched, external to provide information and details of the vacancies available.

  10. 'We all play a part' in keeping people safe, says MPpublished at 11:22 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2020

    BBC Radio Cornwall

A Cornish MP has stressed the importance of following the lockdown rules, especially in regards to second homes.

Derek Thomas, the MP for St Ives, has supported the enforcement of lockdown rules in Cornwall and says everyone plays a part in it.

He recognised people may not be comfortable "snitching on each other" but said the lockdown was in place to "keep people safe and we all play a part in that".

If people were already in their second homes when the second England-wide lockdown was announced then they are entitled to stay, explained the MP.

"The issue is travelling down during lockdown which is absolutely not allowed and the police have assured me they will enforce it where they can."

  11. Council officers to run lockdown spot checks on businessespublished at 09:54 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2020

    BBC Radio Cornwall

Since the start of the second England-wide lockdown, Cornwall Council has received about 100 reports of alleged breaches to the lockdown rules.

In response, council officers will be travelling across the county throughout November doing spot checks on businesses to make sure they are compiling with Covid-19 legislation.

The council has also received 4,000 complaints about people breaking the rules in Cornwall since the first lockdown in March.

However, only one fine of £1,000 has been issued.

Kevin Brader from the environmental health team at the council says enforcement is the last resort.

"Our approach has been engage, educate, encourage and enforce which means we get to compliance before we get to formal enforcement. Because we're trying to get people on board and the majority of businesses are doing things correctly."

    Jenny Walrond

Seven staff members at the South Western Ambulance Service's control hub in Exeter have tested positive for coronavirus over the past two weeks, managers have confirmed.

An additional nine staff based there were currently self-isolating, they added.

The South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust said it was "doing all we can to contain this small outbreak, and keep our staff safe", including providing more testing to staff and conducting deep cleaning.

It added: "We would like to reassure people the outbreak is not adversely impacting our ability to provide a safe and effective service to patients.

"We continue to have high levels of staffing across the trust, and a very low number of our staff are currently off work having tested positive for Covid-19 or through self-isolation."

The trust also said it was "well-prepared to handle expected further increases in coronavirus cases alongside other pressures this winter".

  17. Covid-19 vaccine: South West needs doses for 4.5m peoplepublished at 16:31 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2020

    Andrew Segal
    BBC South West

A Covid-19 mass vaccination programme would be delivered to the South West population in phases, health bosses have said.

NHS England said those who are vulnerable, and health and social care workers, would be prioritised to "protect those most in need and to enable staff to help others".

It added that there were 4.5m people to be vaccinated in the region - which it defined as Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Somerset (including Bath and Bristol), Gloucestershire and Wiltshire.

It also said that "robust national, regional and local plans were being developed to get the vaccine to South West residents, with NHS England and NHS Improvement working closely with local NHS organisations to prepare for delivery of the vaccine".

However, in the meantime, no decision has been made on how people under 50 should be offered a Covid vaccine, the UK's Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation has said.

The committee also said the first phase of rolling out the vaccine would focus on older people who were at most risk.

  19. Changes to Cornwall rubbish collections delayed by a yearpublished at 15:54 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2020

    Richard Whitehouse
    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Plans to introduce fortnightly general rubbish and recycling collection services in Cornwall have been delayed by almost a year.

Cornwall Council has agreed a new eight-year contract with Biffa to provide waste and recycling services across Cornwall.

As part of the new contract, collection services are set to change with recycling and black bag waste being collected fortnightly and the introduction of a new weekly food waste collection service.

The council originally stated that, while the new contract would start this year, the new collection arrangements would not be rolled out until summer 2021 in a phased approach across Cornwall.

However the council has since said that the contract will now start in February 2021 and that the new collection service will start in 2022 – almost a year after it was originally planned.

The council said it was because there was a "lot to organise", including new facilities having to be built and provided, as well as the coronavirus pandemic presenting "additional challenges".

  20. People in 20s see most Covid positive test resultspublished at 15:11 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2020

    Daniel Clark
    Local Democracy Reporting Service

People in their 20s are still testing positive for Covid-19 more than any other age groups across Devon and Cornwall; except in Torbay, where people in their 50s are.

The latest figures, based on tests reported between 3 and 9 November, continue to show that - as was the case last week - Plymouth, Cornwall and the Devon County Council area, the 20 to 29 age group was still seeing the highest prevalence of cases.

But, in Torbay, that is only the fourth highest age range, with the 40 to 49, 50 to 59 and 60 to 69 age ranges seeing more positive tests.

Across Torbay, Plymouth and Cornwall, the proportion of over 60s testing positive has risen in the last week, but there has been a small drop in the Devon County Council area in that age range.

All four areas have seen a drop in the proportion of those aged 10 to 19 testing positive – with one explanation likely to involve the time period of when the tests would have taken place coinciding with the half-term break.
