  5. Seafront road reopens nine weeks after firepublished at 17:12 British Summer Time 6 August 2019

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

A seafront road in Torquay has reopened nine weeks after it was closed following a major fire.

Shedden Hill Road which connects part of the town to the seafront was shut to traffic after the blaze at the Shedden Hall Hotel in early June.

A pedestrian route past the scene was opened shortly after the fire.

The road was closed to traffic when an inspection found a hotel cellar extended under the highway.

Torbay Council had to wait for the site to be cleared of debris before it could assess whether the highway was fully supported and safe to reopen.

Part of the former hotel structure was demolished after the fire because it was dangerous.

The road was reopened at 16:00 on Tuesday.

Up to 50,000 festivalgoers are expected to flock to Boardmasters this weekend.

In addition, we will deploy dedicated armed officers in and around Newquay, traffic cars and traffic motorcyclists, all to keep both residents and visitors safe.

Top tips from Devon and Cornwall Police:

    • Never leave your drink unattended. Even soft drinks can be spiked with drugs or alcohol.
    • If you are concerned for your safety contact the nearest marshal, security guard or police officer.
    • Don’t leave anything valuable in your tent – there are a number of thefts of laptops and smart phones from tents every year. Check your car daily and leave your glove compartment empty and open.
    • Try and keep your phone, cash and cards on you, even at night. All traders on site accept cards, so there is no need to bring a large quantity of cash to the festival.
    • If you are a victim of crime, contact on site police or festival security immediately.
