Image source, Virgin OrbitPlans to build a 'Spaceport' in Cornwall have taken a step forward with a proposed £12m funding from Cornwall Council being approved by the the council's cabinet.
The proposal, which passed by a 6-4 margin, will now be subject to approval by the full council in November.
The cash is a key part of getting the Virgin Orbit satellite launch system off the ground at Newquay Airport.
It is the biggest part of a package including £7.85m from the UK Space Agency and £2.5m from Virgin Orbit.
The plan is to create create a horizontal launch site, Spaceport Cornwall, at Newquay to launch satellites into orbit.
Image source, Virgin OrbitThe £12m means the Virgin Orbit jet, a modified Boeing 747 called Cosmic Girl, is closer to operating out of Newquay in 2021.
Claire Barcham, commercial space director at the UK Space Agency, told the cabinet meeting in a letter that Spaceport Cornwall would "help Cornwall to take a leading role in the UK's emerging spaceflight sector".
She said it was an "extremely exciting time for the South West, which is home to a variety of unique space sector facilities, expertise and assets, including Cornwall Airport Newquay, which have the potential to play a significant role in shaping our future economy".
Virgin Orbit envisages jets carrying satellite launchers slung underneath the fuselage.
The launchers are released and then accelerate and release the satellite into space.
The Spaceport could also be used in the future to send fee-paying passengers on sub-orbital flights.

Two bus drivers have been reported to court for driving without due care and attention, after their coaches which were carrying schoolchildren became stuck in a lane.

"The Year 6 pupils were all very brave and showed excellent ladder mounts as firefighters on and off the bus helped them to safety," said Bovey Tracey fire crews.
Forty four students and five staff were rescued.
"Both drivers have been reported to court for driving without due care and attention," said a Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson.

BBC News OnlineSix kayakers have been rescued after writing "we're stuck" in the sand near Padstow.
They had become trapped by the incoming tide at Butterhole off Gunver Head View at about 16:00 on Tuesday.
A number of people called 999 after seeing the message in the sand.
The Padstow lifeboat was deployed and successfully rescued the kayakers, with help from the Padstow coastguard who were supporting from the cliffs.
A kayaker who had paddled out to raise the alarm was helped back to Trevone by Harlyn Bay RNLI lifeguards.
None of those rescued needed medical attention.

BBC News OnlineA Plymouth MP has called the decision to release convicted pedophile Vanessa George from prison "sickening".
Luke Pollard, Labour MP for Sutton and Devonport added that "she should not be released at all".
George, a former nursery worker was convicted for sexually abusing babies and toddlers in her care in Plymouth and served 10 years.
She is banned from entering Devon and Cornwall.
It was decided by a parole board in July that George, who is 49, no longer poses a "significant risk".

BBC News OnlineA motorcyclist is in a critical condition after an accident at Lee Moor near Plymouth on Tuesday evening.
Devon and Cornwall Police said the 49-year-old man from Launceston lost control on a right hand bend on the B3417.
He was taken to Derriford Hospital where he remains.
The road was closed for six hours whilst officers from the serious collision unit investigated the scene.
Officers would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident.

A 91-year-old woman is walking 91 miles around all 50 of Devon Wildlife Trust's nature reserves to raise money for the charity.
Mary Truell, from Lympstone in east Devon, hopes her journey will encourage more people to get out and about and enjoy them more.
She's already smashed her target of £3,000 with 24 miles still to go.
"It's been a wonderful experience," she said.
"People have been very kind and very generous."
