    The cloud and rain will clear most parts during the evening, however further rain will return after midnight. Temperatures will fall at first but will then rise by dawn.

    The chairman of Colchester United says he has picked the "ideal candidate" to manage the club.

    Kevin Keen will be the U's new permanent boss after Tony Humes left in November.

    Chairman Robbie Cowling told me: "I've known Kevin for some time, and have tried to get him at the club many years ago... He has coached some of the top players in the world."

    Essex Police is investigating after a man had his jaw broken in Colchester town centre.

    The victim, 29, was walking from Silk Road to St Botolph's Church Walk when he was punched in the face by a man on 13 December, police say.

    Officers are especially keen to speak to a group of people who helped the victim after the attack by taking him to the SOS Bus in the High Street for medical treatment.

    A man has been treated for burns to his hands after a fire at an industrial unit in Kirby Cross.

    Essex Fire and Rescue says it was called to Claire Road just before 14:00 this afternoon.

    We are told paramedics were called to deal with the casualty.

    The family of a woman found murdered at her home in Clacton have said her death has left a "space that can never be filled".

    The body of Kathleen Griffin, 57, was discovered at a property in Old Road on Friday. A post-mortem examination revealed she died from multiple stab wounds to her chest.

    Ms Griffin's son, Dale McMullan, said: "Kathy will be dearly missed by all that knew and loved her. We have lost a loving mother, sister and grandma."

    • After a brief caretaker spell at Macclesfield Town, Kevin Keen started his coaching career 13 years ago when he joined West Ham as the Academy coach
    • He later became reserve team coach at the Hammers, before moving to the first team where he supported managers including Alan Pardew and Alan Curbishley
    • Since then he has been head coach at West Brom, and assistant manager at Reading

    The U's have lost their last seven league games and have won just five times in 2015-16.

    However, Kevin Keen said he has seen "two or three games now" and is looking forward to a "couple of decent games to get started".

    Kevin Keen is the new manager of Colchester United, it has been announced.

    The 48-year-old will replace Tony Humes, who left the club in November.

    Keen was first-team coach at Liverpool under Kenny Dalglish in 2011-12 and more recently was assistant manager to Steve Clarke at Reading.

  18. Plucky firefighters thanked after turkey blazepublished at 13:18

    Five months ago a turkey processing plant at Howe Green was destroyed by a large blaze causing damage estimated at more than £1m.

    Now after a total rebuild, the owner of Kelly Turkeys has thanked fire crews by hand-delivering turkeys for their Christmas table. 

    Paul Kelly (pictured centre) donated the birds to stations at Chelmsford, Basildon, Leigh, Southend and Kelvedon.
