    An artist's impression of a Roman arcade has been unveiled, ahead of the remains going on display to the public this summer in Colchester.

    It was built in front of a massive temple dedicated to the Emperor Claudius in the AD50s.

    Philip Crummy, director of Colchester Archaeological Trust, said that the remains were discovered in 1954, but it's only recently that historians have begun to understand the scale and detail of the arcade.

    Essex hospitals, along with others around the country, are dealing with a second strike by junior doctors, who walked out for 24 hours at 08:00.

    I'm at a picket line in Colchester, where bosses say they have had to cancel operations.The medics are walking out after failing to come to an agreement over changes to pay and conditions.

    Serial killer Peter Tobin has returned to jail after treatment in hospital following a suspected stroke.

    The 69-year-old fell ill in his cell at Saughton Prison in Edinburgh on Sunday. 

    Tobin is serving life sentences for murdering Essex teenager Dinah McNicol, who he killed in 1991 after she hitchhiked home from a festival, as well as Polish student Angelika Kluk and Scottish schoolgirl Vicky Hamilton.

    A company called the Flying Trade Group bought land opposite Castle Park in Colchester eight years ago, hoping to build a restaurant. They had no idea the building contained a 120m long arcade, which formed part of the Temple of Claudius in 50AD.

    The company has now agreed to build six apartments and keep the ground floor free for the public to view the archaeological wonder. Three of the arches will be on display under three large glass panels, while an interpretation centre and a café will also be built.

    Suki Dulai, CEO of Flying Trade Group PLC, said: "After the discovery of Claudius Gateway, we’ve decided to preserve and celebrate our history with the community of Colchester."

    The largest Roman arcade in Britain will go on display to the public for the first time this summer.

    The Colchester site, which consists of a series of 28 arches with a large gateway in the middle, was discovered in 1954 but has only been exposed in recent years.

    In other animal news, a seven-week-old puppy who was stolen in a burglary in Stanford-le-Hope has been reunited with his owner.

    The chocolate-and-tan dachshund, named Ralph, was taken from his home in Thors Oak along with a three-figure sum of cash on Saturday morning. He was reunited with his owner last night.

    The suspects are three white men aged between 18 and 22.

    A terrifying leopard-like creature dubbed the 'Beast of Broomfield' has been grounded by his owners after a 17-day spree 'terrorising' neighbours.

    Bengal cat Dougal went awol from his Chelmsford home, prompting owners Hannah Butcher and Darren Brown to put up posters "absolutely everywhere". He was found yesterday when a driving instructor spotted him.

    He gained infamy on social media when a woman claimed to have a leopard in her back garden which had frightened her dog.

    The southbound carriageway at junction 17 of the A12 is not expected to open until this afternoon, following the sad news that there was a fatal crash this morning involving a pedestrian and several lorries.

    Many motorists have been affected by the delays - my journey to work in Chelmsford took an hour and 20 minutes longer than normal.

    There are currently 12-mile tailbacks, with congestion past Witham.

    A flood alert has been issued by the Environment Agency for the Essex and Suffolk coast, from Felixstowe to Clacton - including the Orwell and Stour estuaries. 

    Flooding is possible.

    The forecast high water is due at Harwich today at 13:00.

    A search is continuing for two men who are thought to have been involved in the shooting of a man in his 40s at his mansion in Sible Hedingham.

    Yesterday, Essex Police released an e-fit image of a man who was seen in a car nearby on Saturday.

    The suspects are both described as white, aged in their 20s and of slim build.

    Police have confirmed that a man has died following a crash on the A12 this morning.

    The force says it was called at about 06:10 to reports of a "collision involving a pedestrian and several HGVs", on the southbound carriageway at junction 17.

    The pedestrian, believed to be in his 50s, died at the scene.

    Emergency services are at the scene of the collision at junction 17 for Howe Green - where part of the southbound carriageway is closed.
