  3. Driving tests disrupted after Chelmsford centre closurepublished at 17:50

    Learner drivers in Chelmsford are going to be taking their practical tests around Basildon for the next couple of days after one of the city's test centres closed unexpectedly.

    The site in Hanbury Road, Chelmsford, was found to be closed this morning by examiners and learners who turned up for tests. It's understood a dispute over rent is behind the closure.

    The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) said it had put contingency plans in place and was investigating the situation with the test centre "as a matter of urgency".

  4. Tanker driver 'was trapped between lorry and gate' in fatal collisionpublished at 17:45

    The tanker driver who lost his life this morning after an accident at Ransomes Europark was trapped between a lorry and a gate, police say.

    The man, believed to be in his 30s and working for a fuel tanker company in Purfleet, was pronounced dead at the scene at Latimer Close. 

    The incident is being treated as a fatal road traffic collision. No-one else is thought to have been involved.

    David Cameron has been in the Belgian city today to negotiate his EU reforms ahead of a summit on Thursday.

    "I've seen a few things which have given me food for thought," Ms Blew said, who is in favour of staying in the EU. Ms Edwards, who supports leaving, said she had not yet seen anything to change her mind.

    An investigation is under way into the death of a tanker driver who died in the early hours at Ransomes Europark in Ipswich.

    It's understood the man worked for a fuel tanker company in Purfleet.

    We've had a statement through from the leader of Essex County Council about road safety at the site on the A127 where a 13-year-old boy died on Monday night.

    David Finch said Joseph Sheridan's death was a "tragedy" and his thoughts were with his family.

    “We are urgently reviewing the safety measures along this particular stretch of the A127. Earlier today our engineers visited the site to consider all the available options for improving safety along this stretch of dual carriageway," he said.

    A 19-year-old man from London found with a stab wound to his chest in Napier Avenue, Southend, at the weekend has died in hospital this afternoon.

    Police say he was stabbed in a busy residential area at the junction of Napier Avenue and Queens Road at about 14:15 on Saturday.

    Detectives want to identify the man pictured above and say they urgently need to speak to him as part of their murder investigation.

    A UKIP councillor says he's going to speak to cabinet members to "see what they think can be done" about road safety on the A127 following the death of a 13-year-old boy.

    Joseph Sheridan died in hospital after being hit by a car on Monday night. Last night, protesters calling for a footbridge blocked the carriageway for several hours.

    Nigel LeGresley, county councillor for Wickford Crouch, said: "I think it does warrant a footbridge, but whether or not you're going to get one is a different ballgame."

    The owner of the Budgens shop targeted by ram raiders in Ingatestone early this morning has told me the cash machine the thieves took was empty.

    Paul Taylor estimated the total cost of the damage might run to £25,000 to £30,000 once the shop front is repaired.

    "They've created a lot of mess to steal an empty box," he said. "But it can all be fixed and repaired - at least no one got hurt."

    I've contacted Essex Police and the East of England Ambulance Service about the fire in Bicknacre in which a man died.

    Police told me they were called following reports a man in his 50s had died, and that the circumstances of the fire were not suspicious.

    The ambulance service said crews checked over a woman at the scene, and she was discharged without injury.

    American rock band Eagles of Death Metal have played a concert in Paris - three months after Islamic extremists massacred 89 people, including a man from Essex, at the Bataclan theatre.

    Nick Alexander, 35, from Colchester, was selling merchandise for the band when he was shot. Survivors were all invited and many attended amid tight security.

    Lead singer Jesse Hughes told the cheering crowd at the Olympia theatre he wanted to finish the gig they'd started in November after receiving "overwhelming" support.

    A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a woman whose body was found at a house in Theydon Bois.

    Darren Byrne, 39, of Morgan Crescent in the village, spoke only to confirm his name and address during an appearance at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court this lunchtime. During the hearing, the victim's name was given as Maria Byrne.

    Mr Byrne was remanded in custody to appear at Chelmsford Crown Court tomorrow.

    Southend are at the risk of missing out on the play-offs because of poor set-piece defending, says manager Phil Brown.

    Brown's side, who also lost 1-0 to Scunthorpe on Saturday after a goal from a corner, are three points off the League One play-off places despite the defeat, having been promoted from League Two last year.  

    "We've still got a great opportunity this year. But at the end of the day we're losing it with set-pieces, nothing else," he said.

  18. Men questioned over attempted murder and aggravated burglarypublished at 13:50

    Police officers investigating a burglary in which a homeowner was shot through the bedroom door have arrested two men in their 20s.

    The victim, aged in his 40s and named locally as Timothy Mardon, was shot through a door during the raid on the house in Rectory Road on 6 February.

    Essex Police said two men, aged 27 and 23, both from Sible Hedingham, were being questioned on suspicion of attempted murder and aggravated burglary.

  19. Bicknacre fire: More details emerge following man's deathpublished at 13:30

    I've come to a flat in Bicknacre where a man died earlier today in a fire.

    Fire crews here told me the fire was possibly caused by candles, but they could not be sure how long it had been burning.

    A cat was rescued from the property and taken to a vet for treatment. No-one else was injured in the blaze which happened at about 07:15.
