Rain and showers, some heavy, will clear northeastwards this evening leaving many places dry, especially in the south. Temperatures falling to 3C (37F).

We'll have a few brighter spells during the morning, but they'll be spells of showery rain spreading across the region - thought it will be drier in Essex. Winds moderate increasing to fresh at times with a highs of only 7-9C (upper 40sF).

The death of a man in Pitsea at the end of last year is not being treated as suspicious, police said.

Two men were arrested after Sirjeet Singh, 32, was found dead in Appleford Court in December. 

Essex Police says his death has now been deemed "non suspicious" and no further action will be taken against the men, who are 50 and 37.

Colchester United's Alex Gilbey is almost certainly out the side's League One game with Peterborough tomorrow.

The midfielder was injured in last weekend's win over Blackpool and should be replaced by Tom Lapslie.

The U's are playing Peterborough at the Community Stadium as they continue their fight against relegation.

Two men are arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a sofa is thrown at a police car and an officer is struck by a van.

An officer who was on foot was struck by the van and sustained minor injuries in the pursuit in the Stock Lane area of Ingatestone on Thursday.

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and two others that were in the van were arrested on suspicion of assault.

A teenager accused of two murders was "a thug" who kicked and headbutted fellow pupils, his trial has heard.  

The 17-year-old admits killing James Attfield and Nahid Almanea in Colchester in 2014, but denies murder on grounds of diminished responsibility.

Reading from school reports, psychiatrist Simon Misch told Guildford Crown Court how the boy's behaviour became increasingly violent.

The defendant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was easily led, he said.

The Ministry of Justice says people who smuggle packages over Chelmsford Prison walls could face up to two years in prison under new laws.

People who live nearby have been sent letters asking them to keep an eye out for suspicious activity.

A former prison governor, Kevin Lockyer, said smuggling was an ongoing issue: "While there are a lot of people wanting to get stuff in, every now and again someone will be successful because they're ingenious and staff can't be everywhere all the time."

UKIP leader Nigel Farage has been visiting Tilbury today to discuss the county's policing with the party's police and crime commissioner candidate.

Bob Spink is running as UKIP's candidate for the position, external, alongside Roger Hirst for the Conservatives, Labour's Chris Vince, Kevin McNamara for the Lib Dems and Martin Terry for Zero Tolerance.

The trial jury in the case of a teenager accused of two murders in Colchester has heard he went from being "sensitive" to "increasingly violent".

The 17-year-old, who can't be named for legal reasons, denies the murder of James Attfield and Nahid Almanea in 2014.

Reading from school reports, Dr Peter Misch, an adolescent forensic psychiatrist, told Guildford Crown Court how the defendant went from a boy who was "sensitive to the needs of others" to a teenager whose behaviour was increasingly violent and aggressive.

Manager Phil Brown says the game has come too soon for Anthony Wordsworth, Noel Hunt, Michael Timlin and David Mooney who are recovering from previous injuries.

Essex Police detectives say they're looking for a man wanted for questioning in connection with a murder investigation in Southend.

Nico Ramsey, 19, was found with a stab wound in Napier Avenue in February and later died in hospital.

Police say they want to talk to Allcie Houlder, 21 (pictured), who has links to Statford, Southend, Romford and Newham.

He is believed to have left the UK and taken a ferry from ‎Dover‬ to‪ ‎France‬ on 19 February.

It's looking likely that the U's will have to win all five remaining matches to stand any chance of avoiding the drop.

"You haven't got to win in the first five minutes or 10 minutes... it's 90 minutes - we defend as a team and we go forward as a team," Keen said.

Yesterday evening we told you about how a police officer had been injured after the vehicle he was in was rammed in Ingatestone.

We've just been given some further details - the officer's colleagues had followed a van from Billericay and had shovels, rubble and a sofa thrown towards them before the van they were following crashed into a police car in Stock Lane, Ingatestone.

Four men were arrested for a number of offences - two of them for attempted murder, and three of the four for theft of a motor vehicle.

A man and a teenager who were arrested in connection with the murder of Ladi Benson (pictured) in Chelmsford last year have been released without charge.

A 25-year-old and the 16-year-old, arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and affray, will face no further action. 

A 23-year-old and a 26-year-old, both arrested on suspicion of assault and affray, have also been released from bail with no further action.

If you've driven around Chelmsford lately, you might have noticed the traffic situation has been a bit of a nightmare.

Delays have been happening because part of the new A138 Chelmer viaduct link to the Army and Navy roundabout hasn't yet been opened, and queues have been building every rush hour around the city.

Essex County Council tweeted , externalan apology this afternoon.

A court has heard how the father of the 17-year-old boy accused of the murder of James Attfield and Nahid Almanea in Colchester had "paranoid traits in his personality".

Guildford Crown Court had previously been told the boy's father heard voices in his head when he was an adolescent, and a psychologist told the jury the father was "obsessive, needs routine and is easily irritated".

The man's son admits killing Mr Attfield and Ms Almaea but denies murder on grounds of diminished responsibility.
