    Roadworks that have been causing lengthy delays around Chelmsford in rush hour are due to finish on Saturday.

    Essex County Council said line-painting work along southbound Essex Yeomanry Way, from the Army and Navy down to the A12, is due to be completed in time for tonight's rush hour.

    An Essex Highways spokesman apologised to drivers who had been delayed "by urgent works to improve the A1114 over the last few days".

    There's been a furious reaction in Parliament to news of another delay in deciding where to build a new runway for south-east England.

    Ministers were due to make an announcement next week, but this has now been put off until "at least October".

    Sir Alan Haselhurst, Conservative MP for Saffron Walden, says it's all the more reason to improve transport links to Stansted.

  6. Gas explosion house rebuild to take 22 weekspublished at 16:45 British Summer Time 30 June 2016

    Tendring District Council says rebuilding the levelled house in Clacton will take about 22 weeks to complete, depending on the weather.

    Planning permission was granted earlier this year for the Cloes Lane development.

    One half of the semi-detached house was totally destroyed and it is hoped the second half will be rebuilt in due course.

    The council home will be constructed in such a way that the other home can be added on at a later stage.

    It was an enormous gas explosion that left a number of people injured and shook the ground back in 2014.

    But now work is to begin to replace the house destroyed following the Cloes Lane blast in Clacton in February 2014.

    It reduced one family's semi-detached home to rubble and wiped out a second home.

    Other properties were also damaged in the incident.

    You may well have heard of the special court verdict "not guilty by reason of insanity".

    What you might not know is that the judge who introduced it to common law was born in Chelmsford.

    Chelmsford Museum has now acquired a portrait of Judge Tindal (1776-1846) painted by Thomas Phillips.

    When residents and visitors to Chelmsford take a stroll down Tindal Square and Tindal Street, it is Judge Tindal's memory that their names bear.

    Police are appealing for help in finding James Bergin, who is reported missing from Sible Hedingham.

    Mr Bergin, 77, was last seen at 11:00 in a park off Hawkwood Road and officers and his family are concerned for his welfare.He is wearing a navy blue shirt and trousers and black shoes, and is 5ft 10in (1.77m) tall and of medium build.

  10. Man killed in Manningtree road collisionpublished at 14:43 British Summer Time 30 June 2016

    Police say a 20-year-old man has died following a road crash earlier in Manningtree. Firefighters and police were called to the B1035 Clacton Road in Horsley Cross at 07:30 after a black Fiat Punto collided with a Volvo tipper truck. The Fiat’s engine caught fire but was quickly extinguished. Its driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The lorry driver, a 50-year-old man, was uninjured.

    The road is closed between the junctions with the A120 and Steam Mill Road.

    Despite the early speculation, John Baron's hat was not tossed into the Conservative leadership ring.

    The MP for Basildon and Billericay had taken soundings but, like former London Mayor Boris Johnson, had not put himself forward by the midday cut-off point for nominations.

    A fire that took hold in containers filled with cloth and material is "expected to be a protracted incident".

    The fire in Maidstone Road, Grays, started at about 02:00 and involves a number of interlocked metal containers.

    Assistant divisional officer John Sherrington said: "Crews are likely to be here all day and potentially into the night as we continue to battle to find the seat of the fire to extinguish it.

    "The situation crews are facing is a series of nine containers piled two high in the yard of a fabrics and material shop.

    "The containers are all filled to the brim with linen, pillows and fabric and we know that at least four are alight."

    Three exciting new evening flights have been unveiled for this year’s Clacton Airshow. It will be the first time that the organisers Tendring District Council (TDC) have included this attraction and on the ground activities will continue up to the display which will last from 8pm to 8.30pm on August 25.     A new aerobatics team called Aerosparx will use wing-tip fireworks to paint the evening sky at this year's Clacton Air Show, external.

    The display will take place between 20:00 and 20:30 on 25 August.

    BBC Essex is the media partner for the air show and will be doing live coverage throughout.

    Aerosparx is one of three evening-time shows lined up for the event.

    A man has appeared at Basildon Magistrates' Court charged with murder.

    Daniel Mitchell-Monroe, 37, died from stab wounds to the chest in Basildon on Tuesday.

    During a brief hearing, Joram Bakumanya was brought into the dock, wearing a red jumper and tracksuit bottoms.

    The 22-year-old, of no fixed address, confirmed his name and age.

    No plea was entered and there was no application for bail. He will appear at Chelmsford Crown Court tomorrow.

    Police are at the scene of a serious road crash near Manningtree.

    Officers were called to the B1035 Clacton Road in Horsley Cross at 07:30. The car was on fire.

    Emergency services are still at the location dealing with the incident. The road is shut between the junctions with the A120 and Steam Mill Road.

    Officers have appealed for witnesses.

    A barrister who quit the law to become a teacher says his family and friends have labelled him "barking mad".

    Harlow-based lawyer and political strategist John Paul Goddard said he was applying as an unqualified teacher.

    He has applied for posts in primary education and is only interested in east London schools that are not rated good or outstanding.
