  1. Fog not affecting Stansted so farpublished at 08:50 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2017

    Despite fog disrupting flights in the South East yesterday, Stansted Airport appears to be unaffected today.

    The Essex terminal dealt with several flights which were diverted from Heathrow on Monday. 

    Today, Stansted reports it has no cancellations, but is urging passengers to check with their airlines for the latest before they travel.

  3. Southend groundsman's sacking 'appears to demean' professionpublished at 08:31 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2017

    Yesterday, we reported on Southend United's sacking of Ken Hare - the club's groundsman of 27 years.

    It followed the postponement of Saturday's match against Bolton at Roots Hall.

    The club issued a statement which said: "People generally lose their position as a result of not doing their job. The necessary decision surrounding Mr Hare was a disappointment and of course not taken lightly."

    The Institute of Groundsmanship, external has said the sacking "brings immediate questions and concerns".

    A statement continued: "The club's action has attracted national media attention which reflects the shock across the groundscare industry with the sacking of a long-serving professional groundsman with over 27 years' dedicated service to the club. 

    "The club's action appears to demean both the profession of groundsmanship and, of course, the individual concerned, who surely deserves more respect than appears to be the case, on the facts available so far. 

    "Obtaining the necessary information is now an urgent priority for all of us at the IOG; to be able to provide the appropriate level of support to one of our members."

    A largely dry night with some clear spells and a widespread frost across the BBC East region.

    A yellow warning has also been issued by the Met Office, external for areas of dense and possibly freezing fog, leading to difficult travelling conditions by road and air. 

    Temperatures under clear skies falling below freezing, perhaps as low as -5C (23F).

    Tomorrow the fog could linger through the day, but there will be areas where it lifts and we could eventually see some brightness and sunshine developing. 

    There’ll be light south to south-westerly winds and highs of around 6C (43F). 

    Where the fog lingers temperatures may struggle to get above freezing.

    Several events are taking place around the county today in the run-up to Holocaust Memorial Day, which is on Friday.

    Among them is a commemoration that's been organised by the Chelmsford Jewish Community. 

    It's happening at Chelmsford City Council's council chamber this evening. 

    The day is remembering the victims of the Holocaust and other genocides and is marked each year on the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Poland, which was build by Nazi Germany during the occupation.

    This year's principal guest is Leslie Kleinma who was born in Romania in 1929 and ended up surviving, despite being sent to Auschwitz in May 1944. 

  9. Shadow fire minister calls fire chief suspension a 'witch hunt'published at 17:32 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2017

    Labour's shadow fire minister Carolyn Harris has criticised Essex Fire Authority for failing to publish a report, ready last September, into the conduct of the county's fire chief, David Johnson, who's been suspended for two years.

    BBC Essex reported on the findings earlier after being leaked a copy. 

    Ms Harris said: "The local fire authority seems to have spent an inordinant amount of money on what appears to be something of a witch hunt. 

    "I would say to Essex Fire Authority, stop this nonsense and get this man back to work."

    The FBU union says it believes the cost of suspending Mr Johnson and his replacement is "in excess of £700,000". 

    Meanwhile a spokeswoman for Essex Fire Authority , externalsaid: “It is important to note that the report which has been shared with the BBC is not the only piece of evidence in the investigation into David Johnson which will be considered by the Fire Authority in a few weeks’ time.

    “Legal representatives on both sides are working hard to draw matters to a conclusion, which is in the interests of everyone concerned, including Essex taxpayers."

    Brentwood's Catholic Cathedral is closing at the end of the month for repairs and redecoration.

    It's to re-open in March and the timing of the works has been chosen so that it can be ready for celebrations of the centenary of the diocese of Brentwood, which was established in 1917.

    Structural works will include the replacing of glass in the lantern or cupola that sits on the top of the cathedral and there are damp issues affecting the front of the building, as well as some leaking windows.

    Brentwood Cathedral has a thriving parish community with over 1,200 people attending mass every Sunday.

    Sunday mass will move across the road to Brentwood School while the work is being carried out.

  12. Jail term cut for woman who stole £105,000 from pensionerpublished at 17:11 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2017

    A woman who was jailed for defrauding a vulnerable pensioner of her life's savings has had her sentence reduced. 

    Roseanne Oakley, 45, befriended the 69-year-old woman and invited her to live in her caravan in Felsted, Essex, before conning her out of £105,000.

    Oakley who admitted theft at Chelmsford Crown Court last May was originally jailed for five years but the Court of Appeal cut this by six months to take account of her guilty plea.

    The court heard Oakley had committed 13 previous offences, including fraud and theft.

    A man, charged with assaulting a police officer in Chigwell and taking his squad car with a police dog in the back, has been remanded in custody.

    Tony Turner, 36, of Vincent Road, Dagenham has been accused of a number of offences including assault and aggravated vehicle-taking. 

    He was remanded after appearing at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court and will appear at court again next month.

    The car was recovere by the police, with the dog unharmed.

  14. Investigation of death at Chelmsford jail on Christmas daypublished at 16:35 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2017

    The prison service says there's to be an investigation into the death of an inmate who died at Chelmsford prison on Christmas Day.

    A Ministry of Justice spokesman confirmed 46-year-old Craig Royce died while in custody. 

    "As with all deaths in custody there will be an independent investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman, external."    

    The police say they were notified "about a man who was seriously ill following an incident" at 09:20 on Christmas Eve and that "sadly the man died the next day."  

    The spokesman added that the death was not deemed to be suspicious and a file had been prepared for the coroner.

    A judge has dismissed a bid to wind up Southend United after being told that a debt had been cleared.

    Tax officials had made an application for a winding up order against the League One football club.

    But at a Bankruptcy & Companies Court hearing in London, the registrar Nicholas Briggs dismissed the application after a lawyer representing HM Revenue & Customs told him that money owed has been paid.

    No indication of the size of the debt emerged at the hearing.

  19. Claims Colchester bus lane causing 'dangerous u-turns'published at 15:25 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2017

    Campaigners are calling for a bus lane in Colchester's High Street to be removed.

    They're claiming it's leading to some drivers to perform dangerous u-turns. 

    However, Essex Highways says drivers need to be safe while travelling in a busy town centre environment and the lane helps keep traffic moving. 

    But Jo Edwards from the Colchester Civic Society, external says the removal would lead to a smaller build-up of traffic. 

    "There's no reason why traffic would build up," she said.

    "At the moment the u-turns are holding the traffic up going either up or down East Hill. 

    "If the bus lane was free then people would just go down it without any problems whatsover."

    Following the sentencing, Det Con Insp Leighton Hammett said: "Charlie Simms and Christopher Bergin [pictured left and right] are violent, dangerous men who deserve to be behind bars.

    "The severity of this attack, which was conjured up on a whim following a heavy night of drinking and smoking drugs, is reflected in the length of their sentences."Essex will be a safer place now Simms and Bergin are behind bars, and they will now spend the foreseeable future reflecting on their crime and the impact their actions have had."
