    The family of Paul Gladwell, the Colchester man who died after being arrested at the Pontins resort near Lowestoft, say he had Asperger Syndrome (an autistic spectrum disorder, external).

    The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating the case. Mr Gladwell was being taken to the Great Yarmouth Police Investigation Centre, when officers realised he needed medical treatment.

    He died at James Paget Hospital yesterday.

    Police were called to the holiday park by security to investigate reports of a fight between holiday-makers.

    Andrea Water, from SAFE - a support group for people and families affected by Asperger Syndrome, says people with the condition "typically do suffer with anxiety".

    "If they were really agitated, they could lash out and become aggressive or they could run," she added. 

    "It would be very hard for them to communicate how they are feeling."

  4. Pontins holiday camp death: Paul Gladwell had 'heart of gold'published at 08:28 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2017

    A man arrested at a holiday park who later died in hospital had a "heart of gold", one of his friends has said.

    Paul Gladwell, 38, from Colchester, was detained by staff at Pontins in Pakefield near Lowestoft on Tuesday and was later arrested on suspicion of assault by Suffolk Police.

    He was taken to James Paget Hospital in Gorleston when officers became concerned for his wellbeing while on the way to Great Yarmouth Police Investigation Centre.

    His friend Jane Harvey said she had not been able to take in the news of his death.

    "It's come as a terrible shock," she said. "As soon as I was told about his death I completely lost it, I got hysterical - I couldn't help it."

    Our top story this morning: The family of Paul Gladwell, a Colchester man who died during a holiday at Pontins, say they'll never get over their loss.

    Mr Gladwell, who was 38, became ill after being arrested following a fight and died later in hospital. 

    His family say he had Asperger Syndrome and claim his death was avoidable.

    The BBC has been speaking to relatives of Paul Gladwell, who died after an incident and his subsequent arrest at Pontins holiday camp near Lowestoft.

    The 38-year-old from Colchester was a father-of-three.

    His family have made complaints on social media about how an alleged confrontation and its aftermath was handled by Pontins and Suffolk Police.

    The Independent Police Complaints Commission is investigating, but Suffolk Police and Pontins have not issued any comment or statements themselves.

  10. Woman taken to hospital after Army & Navy crashpublished at 17:10 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2017

    A woman has been taken to hospital after a road accident in the centre of Chelmsford. 

    Three fire engines and an ambulance attended the crash at the Army & Navy roundabout just after 14:30.

    The woman's condition is being assessed by paramedics. The road was closed.

    The IPCC has issued a statement following the death of Paul Gladwell, 38, (pictured) of Colchester who died after an incident at Pontins holiday camp on the Suffolk coast.

    IPCC commissioner Cindy Butts said: "Our thoughts are with the man’s relatives and friends at this difficult time. 

    "Our investigators will be conducting a thorough inquiry into all the circumstances surrounding his interaction with the police."

    The Colchester United, external manager John McGreal says a change in formation may be necessary due to their long injury list.

    The U's are without five central defenders, striker Chris Porter and midfielders Drey Wright and Doug Loft.  

    The club's website, external says they are looking to "bounce back from their mid-week reverse and keep pace with the play off race" this Saturday at Accrington.

    The Independent Police Complaints Commission says its investigation is under way and a team has "attended the scene" following the death of Paul Gladwell.

    They were talking to people who were at Pontins on Tuesday, 14 Febuary and they were gathering CCTV footage.

    It said Mr Gladwell's family had been informed.

  18. Man dies after incident at Pontins holiday camppublished at 14:07 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2017

    The Independent Police Complaints Commission is confirming that it is investigating the arrest and subsequent death of a man at Pontins's Pakefield Holiday Park.

    A spokesman says the dead man is Paul Gladwell, 38, from Colchester.

    The statement says he was "initially detained by staff at Pontins" at about 23:40 on Tuesday and subsequently arrested by Suffolk Police on suspicion of assault.

    While being taken to Great Yarmouth Police Investigation Centre "officers became concerned for his wellbeing, stopped the van and contacted an ambulance".

    He was treated at the scene and then taken to the James Paget Hospital in Gorleston where he was pronounced dead earlier today.
