  1. From the archives: Waltham Abbey's Dunlop's factory 1935published at 14:45 British Summer Time 27 April 2017

    Eighty two years ago this month, a worker at Dunlop's factory in Waltham Abbey in Essex was photographed checking the dimensions of a racket. At the time about 2,500 rackets were produced each week. Each one took a year to produce. The factory closed in the 1980s.

    We thought we'd bring you two photos taken in April 1956 and April 1973 of Essex County Cricket Club.

    The RSPCA is appealing for information after a dog was tied to a dustbin and abandoned in Chelmsford.

    George, a Jack Russell terrier-cross, was found tied to a dustbin outside the Travelodge on 14 March.

    The local RSPCA branch have been caring for him since his rescue.

    RSPCA inspector Adam Jones said: “I'm hopeful someone might recognise the poor little terrier.

    “Witnesses say someone simply walked the dog over to the bin, looked around before tying him up and then ran away. How anyone could do this to a pet is beyond me.”

    The RSPCA would like to speak to a woman who was seen with the dog. She is described as in her late 30s to early 40s, around 5ft 5in tall, wearing grey sports clothes and with blonde hair tied back in a ponytail.

    People across Basildon and Brentwood are being asked to celebrate life by sharing their favourite images of friends, family or pets who have died.

    The online campaign, called Die Well Essex, external, is being supported by Basildon and Brentwood Clinical Commissioning Group and other health, social care, charities and voluntary groups.

    Using Instagram, people are being encouraged to share their favourite images of people, places or things that celebrate life as well as acknowledging the reality of death.

    Dr Elizabeth Towers, Macmillan GP for Mid Essex CCG, said: “We’re looking for photos of places where people have felt happiest before dying or images of people and things that celebrate life in the face of death.

    "It doesn’t have to be gloomy, although for some people the right image will contain sadness."

    The Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, has visited Harlow to announce the party's promise to build a million new homes if it wins the general election. 

    The Conservatives insist they have a clear plan for more affordable properties. But Mr Corbyn told Labour supporters that it was only his party which could deliver on housing:

    A man is due in court today following a collision in which a pregnant woman was hit by a car. It happened in London Road in Leigh-on-Sea.

    Shopkeeper Vinisha Ajanraj (pictured with her husband Thangarasa Ajanraj) was seriously hurt when she was hit by a car outside the shop in March.  

    The couple's unborn baby was not harmed.   

    Rico Dupres, 25, of Enfield, is due today at Basildon Combined Court charged with several offences.

    Conservative Robert Halfon won the seat in 2010 defeating Labour's Bill Rammell.

    Mr Rammell had won the seat in the Labour landslide in 1997 from Conservative MP Jerry Hayes.

    Councillor Jeff Bray has been selected locally as UKIP's candidate for Clacton in June's general election.

    The decision now has to get confirmed by the party headquarters - that's likely to happen on Friday.

    He had considered pulling out of the race after the Huffington Post reported, external he'd posted controversial tweets online.

    Mr Bray (pictured) claims the posts were doctored and he's glad to now have been selected.

    He told BBC Essex: "The change of heart was really quite straight forward. There was a bit of a wobble, but it was not a serious wobble.

    "Some nasty things were put up. We have not had a UKIP candidate who has not had to put up with nasty things and fake tweets thrown about."
