    A man's been arrested following a fatal crash in Saffron Walden.

    A 33-year-old man died, after the car he was a passenger in went into a tree in Chestnut Avenue in the early hours of Sunday. Two other people were treated in hospital.

    The driver, a 34-year-old man from Stoke-on-Trent, has been questioned on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been released under investigation.

    A 46-year-old woman's been charged with attempted murder, following a stabbing in Clacton.

    She was held on Saturday after a 68-year-old man was found injured at an address off Wellesley Road last weekend. She's due in court later.

    The victim's being treated in hospital, but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

    Friends and neighbours of Darren Black, a former firefighter from Maldon who has motor-neurone disease, have been transforming his garden to make it wheelchair-friendly.

    The work took place in Tollesbury over the weekend and many items used were donated by BBC Essex listeners.

    Sarah Carter, makeover organiser, said: "We had about 80 people turn up on the day and we achieved such a beautiful garden.

    "I think Darren and Chloe loved it.The best day ever!"

    Essex Police are beginning a push, external for new recruits today. Bosses say they're looking for individuals with strong values who can make sound decisions.

    PC Daryl Jones says he doesn't do it for the money. His comments come as ministers face more pressure to get rid of the 1% cap on public sector pay rises.

    "We obviously start on a lower rate, but over the years we get regular pay increases," he said.

    "If you go up the rank structure there's additional pay there. I'm more than happy with what I get paid.

    "I don't do my job for the money. I do it because I enjoy it."

    A man's in a critical condition in hospital after being bitten by a dog in Walton-on-the-Naze in the north east of the county.

    The 73-year-old became unwell last Tuesday, two days after he was attacked in Naze Court in Old Lane.

    He was passing a man with a dog, believed to be a Staffordshire bull terrier, when the dog bit him on his right leg, causing a small wound.

    Det Insp Gary Biddle says: "We are trying to establish what happened and would like to speak to the dog owner and any witnesses who can help us with our inquiries.

    "We are treating the dog owner as a witness at this time and are keen to talk to him to establish what occurred."

    Here's a fabulous photograph of highly successful welter and middleweight champion boxer Ted "Kid" Lewis, external, who was born Gershon Mendeloff and is pictured right, sparring with Thomas "Pedlar" Palmer, external at Shoeburyness, Essex.

    Lewis was an English professional boxer from the East End of London who twice won the World Welterweight Championship.

    He is often grouped alongside the all-time greats and boxing historian Bert Sugar, external placed him 46th in his Top 100 Fighters catalogue.

    A Hainault teenager is in a stable condition in hospital after being been stabbed in Chigwell.

    Police were called to the a car park in Copperfield on Friday evening at about 19:25 where they found the 17-year-old victim.

    Two men in their 20s have been arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice.

    Essex Police, external think it was a targeted attack.

    A priest says Basildon is a generally peaceful and safe place with a strong ethnic mix.

    His comments come after a Muslim woman had her car burnt out the day after the London Bridge terror attack.

    She's too scared to be identified, but told the BBC she forgives those that set it alight in Crosse Court in the Essex town.

    Police are treating the incident as a hate crime, external.

    Father Dominic Howarth, from Our Lady and All Saints Church - near to where the arson attack happened, says he's happy to hear the victim says she bears no ill-will against whoever did it.

    "Love, generosity and forgiveness is always stronger than hatred and terror and it's down to all of us to make that the thing that triumphs," he said.

  10. Tilbury Football Club in tribute to ex-player who's been stabbed to deathpublished at 08:33 British Summer Time 3 July 2017

    Three men have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a former non-league footballer was stabbed to death.

    Kevin Malthouse (pictured right) had played for Tilbury Football Club between 2011 and 2014.

    Police found Mr Malthouse in Blackshots Lane, Grays, at about 00:35 on Saturday.

    He had been stabbed in the chest and died at the scene.

    Officers were alerted to men fighting and found three others with "life-threatening injuries", police said.

    Mr Malthouse's former team, Tilbury Football Club, external, has paid tribute, saying he was "a lovely lad, he would pretty much do anything for you and wouldn't hurt a fly".

    Another in Chigwell involved a teenager who's in a stable condition in hospital with detectives saying they believe the stabbing was a targetted attack.
