    Animal rescues by Essex firefighters increased from 92 in 2014 to 119 in 2016, according to figures obtained by the BBC from a nationwide survey.

    Over the past three years fire crews in the county have been called out to rescue 315 stranded animals.

    "Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, external make a decision to attend animal rescues on a case by case basis," a spokesman said.

    "However, we do attend incidents if the risk assessment is confirmed as a potential life risk. This could be the life of the animal or the potential for a member of the public to put themselves in danger in an attempt to rescue the animal themselves.

    "The service has a specialist animal rescue unit, with fully trained crews... to rescue animals from a range of dangerous situations."

  4. Man pleads not guilty to fatal hit and run crashpublished at 16:56 British Summer Time 24 July 2017

    A man has pleaded not guilty to being the driver involved in a fatal hit and run accident at Hitcham, near Hadleigh.

    It's alleged 51-year-old Mark Tuffs, of Alibon Road, Dagenham, was driving a lorry at the time and failed to report an accident had happened.

    Mr Tuffs is also accused of causing death by careless driving and failing to stop after a road accident.

    Cyclist Colin Taylor died following the crash at Luckeys Corner on the B1115 in November last year.

    Mr Tuffs will appear at Ipswich Crown Court on 21 August.

    Sports facilities, parks and open spaces, flood protection, health care, public areas and highway improvements plus affordable housing across Chelmsford are to get a share of £10m in a programme to boost city infrastructure.

    The city council, external has approved spending £2.445m on a new venue at the Riverside Ice and Leisure Centre alongside enhancements to GP surgeries, 58 schemes in the city's parks and open spaces and a new family hub in the central library.

    "We need to ensure vital infrastructure is available to underpin the growth in population and housing and to support exciting developments across a number of key sites," council leader Roy Whitehead said.

    A small group of travellers has been given 24 hours to leave a former playing field near two schools in Shoeburyness.

    The group of seven caravans and vehicles arrived at the site in London Road on Friday afternoon and told council officials they intended to stay for a week before moving on to a holiday park in the area.

    The land, which backs on to Whitehall Academy and Clacton Coastal Academy, is owned by Tendring District Council, external which has has received complaints from residents about the encampment.

    The Essex County Traveller Unit has been informed about the situation and the group will be issued with a direction to leave which gives them 24 hours to move on.

    If they stay over this limit the unit will begin legal action to have the travellers evicted, the council said.

    Paul Honeywood, cabinet member for housing, said the council was acting to have the group removed from its land as quickly as possible.

    "We do have to follow a tired and tested process of issuing the direction to leave which, if not successful, will be followed up by action through the courts," he said.

  8. Council tax discount and exemption review under waypublished at 14:32 British Summer Time 24 July 2017

    A review of all households claiming a discount or exemption on their council tax is under way in Southend.

    The borough council, external is aiming to validate legitimate claims and identify and remove those in error or that are fraudulent.

    The council will check to see whether people are genuinely claiming the reduction by cross-referencing with other sources of information about their household.

    "We will be contacting all those receiving discounts and exemptions via letter and or telephone and we would urge people to respond quickly or their claims could be withdrawn," Andrew Moring, executive councillor for community and corporate support, said.

    Tax payers will face a penalty notice of £70 if they fail to respond or provide the council with inaccurate or false information. Repeat offences may lead to a penalty of £280, the councillor said.

    The review will continue until the end of the year.

    Birds using a newly created RSPB nature reserve on Wallasea Island, external include lapwing, golden plover, teal, redshank and curlew as the newly formed habitat goes from strength-to-strength.

    Plants such as samphire, sea lavender and sea aster are also expected to thrive at Jubilee Marsh created using the spoil from Crossrail tunnel excavation, the RSPB, who manage the reserve, said.

    "We had 100 pairs avocets breeding on Wallasea last year and it looks to be similar numbers this year," warden Rachel Fancy said.

    "For a bird which was once threatened with extinction across the country, this is a remarkable success story.

    "We have also seen increased numbers of other birds that didn't breed here before such as terns, which have been diving into the new lagoons for fish."

    A 16-year-old boy has been arrested at Stansted Airport on suspicion of terrorism offences by a police special operations unit and counter terrorism officers.

    The boy, from the Kent area, was due on a flight leaving the UK and was detained at about 16:00 on Sunday.

    He is being held in custody on suspicion of collecting information likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism under Section 58 of the Terrorism Act 2000, external, police said.

  12. Former carer 'nervous of stairs' now wants a sheltered homepublished at 12:53 British Summer Time 24 July 2017

    A shortage of sheltered housing across the county is leading to long waits for properties by some residents who want to move out of their family homes.

    Councils try to accommodate residents' wishes, but an average delay of 10 months for properties to become available is common and some residents have had to wait up to four years, a BBC Essex investigation has revealed.

    Four people are sought by police investigating a ram-raid on a cash machine at a Co-op store near Brentwood.

    A silver Ford Ranger pick-up truck was rammed into the Co-op store in Harewood Road, at Pilgrims Hatch, in the early hours of this morning.

    Four suspects armed with axes and crowbars then drove off in a dark-coloured hatchback car after taking the free-standing cash machine from the store.

    Firefighters blamed a bonfire that spread out of control for a large barn blaze near Chelmsford.

    Emergency crews were first called to the scene, in Southend Road, just before 03:00 on Sunday and the flames took several hours to bring under control.

    There were no reports of any injuries and the fire was extinguished by midnight, Essex Fire and Rescue said.

  15. Travellers arrival on former playing fields 'being dealt with', council sayspublished at 12:08 British Summer Time 24 July 2017

    A group of travellers that has set up camp on the former playing fields of a school in Shoeburyness, near Southend, are being dealt with, the borough council said.

    Several caravans and other vehicles arrived at the site yesterday afternoon and set up just yards way from the east beach and close to an area of scientific interest.

    A local Conservative councillor says the situation is being "dealt with" but did not go into detail. The owners of 4x4 vehicles and their caravans arrived at George Street yesterday afternoon causing a traffic jam.

    They managed to open the locked gates of the fenced off field which hasn't been used since the school relocated to Gunners Park in Shoeburyness Garrison.

    Budget airline Ryanair, external has posted profits rose 55% to £356m, but again warned that Brexit could cause it to ground flights and cancel holidays unless a deal with the EU is struck.

    Ryanair, with a major base at Stansted, said business was boosted by the timing of Easter with a 12% rise in customer numbers to 35 million.

    Because of the UK’s vote to leave the European Union Mr O’Leary told the BBC last year Ryanair is ‘pivoting’ more of its operations towards Europe.

    New habitat on the RSPB Wallasea Island reserve, external, created by using the spoil from the tunnels excavated for the Crossrail project, external has attracted more than 12,000 birds of many different species.

    Crossrail donated more than 3m tonnes of material to re-create a previously lost wetland twice the size the City of London.

    Only two years after the work for Jubilee Marsh, external, on the island near Southend, was completed and the sea wall breached to create a new wetland - wildlife making its home there is reaching huge numbers, the RSPB said.

    "The highest count of birds ever recorded has now reached 12,000, meaning that the reserve is becoming a haven for wintering birds," a spokesperson said.

    The Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell is visiting Thurrock today to make a bid to rally Labour members in the marginal constituency.

    At the last election the Conservatives won the seat with a majority of 345 votes - the Labour candidate who missed out was John Kent.

    Mr McDonnell is also likely to field questions about Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn who claimed over the weekend that during the election campaign he said he would "deal with" the issue of graduates burdened with debt since tuition fees rose to £9,000.

    He told the BBC he had never promised to abolish all debt as Labour "were unaware of the size of it at the time".

    A 51-year-old man has been arrested following a stabbing near Basildon.

    The attack happened at a property in Langdon Hills on Saturday evening, police said.

    A man suffered a stab wound to the chest and was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
