    A man is being treated in hospital following an alleged assault in Southampton.

    Hampshire Constabulary said the man was attacked shortly after midday in London Road.

    The extent of his injuries are not yet known.

  2. RFA Gold Rover enters Portsmouth for final timepublished at 12:21 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2017

    RFA Gold Rover has entered Portsmouth for final time after 43 years in service.  

    The 11,000-tonne tanker – the oldest vessel in the naval service - used to provide fuel front-line operations and is due to be decommissioned next month.

    It is the last of five Rover-class ships built for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary in the late 1960s/early 1970s.

  3. Warning over vehicle height after lorry hits rail bridgepublished at 12:03 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2017

    Network Rail has confirmed a lorry hit a rail bridge just outside of Brockenhurst earlier leading to the line being closed.

    Engineers arrived at the site and deemed the structure safe for trains to resume but delays are expected for another hour.

    Network Rail urged drivers to "check the height of their vehicles when passing under bridges".

    Train passengers are facing delays after a vehicle struck a bridge, external between Brockenhurst and Bournemouth.

    All lines have been closed and services have been delayed by up to 30 minutes or revised.

    Disruption is expected until about 13:00.

    Breaking

    A WW2 bomb, dredged up in Portsmouth Harbour, has been towed out to sea and detonated.

    The device, believed to be a German SC250, containing 290lb (131kg) of "high explosives" was found in the early hours.

    Train and ferry services, including cross-channel ferries, were suspended until about 07:30 GMT.

    Royal Navy divers detonated the device a few minutes ago off the north east corner of Ryde.

    Royal Navy bomb disposal experts are still dealing with an unexploded WW2 bomb found in the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour.

    The German SC250 bomb was found in the early hours of this morning in the excavator head of a barge dredging the harbour.

    Specialist divers have towed the bomb out to sea where they are preparing to detonate it.  

    Portsmouth Harbour was temporarily closed to vessels until about 07:30 GMT when it was deemed safe to reopen the harbour.

  14. Tribute to cyclist killed in Bournemouth crashpublished at 10:00 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2017

    The family of a cyclist who died in a crash in Bournemouth on Saturday have thanked passers-by who came to his aid.

    Gordon Randall, 79, was riding his bike at about 15:45 GMT in the Cranmer Road car park in Winton when he was struck by a car.

    He was taken to Southampton General Hospital by air ambulance but later died from his injuries.

    In a statement his family said: “We would like to thank everyone who came to Gordon’s aid at the scene of the collision."
