A county bowls final was abandoned after an argument erupted when a player appeared to headbutt an opponent, who fell and broke a finger.

The Hampshire County Mens Final between Southsea Waveley and Boscombe Cliff was held in Southampton on Sunday.

Players reported a Boscombe player squaring up to an opponent following a dispute over bowls "etiquette". Other Boscombe players immediately conceded the match, meaning Waverley retained the county champions title.

  4. Coach to carry Horton campaigners to key meetingpublished at 13:02 British Summer Time 9 August 2017

A coach will carry campaigners to a key meeting in Oxford tomorrow where changes to the maternity unit at Horton General Hospital in Banbury will be decided.

The unit has been temporarily downgraded to a midwife-led unit due to a shortage of doctors and Oxfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group (OCCG) will decide if the move will be permanent.

The proposal has been controversial, on Monday Oxfordshire County Council's Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee agreed to refer the decision to the Secretary of State for Health - if it is approved.

Four other recommendations will also be considered at the meeting:

    • Axing 146 hospital beds in Oxfordshire, of which 110 have already gone, in order to enable investment in other services
    • Requiring every patient from Oxfordshire where stroke is suspected to be taken to the Hyper Acute Stroke Unit at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford
    • Changing the critical care unit, which helps patients with the highest needs (intensive care), at Horton General Hospital to a level two centre, to leave Oxfordshire with a single level three critical care unit
    • Creating a new diagnostic and outpatient centre at Horton General Hospital

The recommendations are part of phase one of the Sustainability and Transformation Plan for Oxfordshire which is designed to save £200m from health and social care budgets by 2020.

Portchester Castle has stood at the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour for centuries. Its role holding prisoners of war is no secret to anyone who's seen the prisoners' names carved into its Norman stone walls.

What's less well known is that in 1796, at the height of slavery, the castle held over 2,000 black men, women and children from the Caribbean. They weren't slaves, but French prisoners of war.

New research by English Heritage is revealing remarkable detail about their life at Portchester.
