    A knife amnesty saw 47 blades, including a potato peeler and can opener, handed in to Thames Valley Police.

    It was part of Operation Sceptre, a national campaign to reduce knife crime.

    A bayonet with scabbard, believed to date from the First World War, was also surrendered.

    Knife crime increased by 32% and possession offences rose by 27%, between 1 April to 31 March 2017 compared to the same period in 2016, according to Thames Valley Police figures.

  2. Inquiry over discarded drug needles in Southamptonpublished at 12:00 British Summer Time 11 August 2017

    Drug users in Southampton are putting people at risk by discarding their used needles in parks and car parks, the city council has said.

    Over 7,000 needles were found in the city from April 2016 to March 2017.

    Last night councillors voted to launch an inquiry over the issue.

    It's estimated more than 1,500 people in Southampton use opiates and/or crack cocaine and more than 600 inject drugs.

    The authority said if anyone comes across drug litter anywhere, do not touch it and report it to them on Actionline 02380 833005 or through the council website, external.

    Big news from Southampton.Virgil van Dijk, who has handed in a transfer request, will not face Swansea on Saturday, according to manager Mauricio Pellegrino.

    "My reaction is the same that I said three weeks ago," said Pellegrino. "We are expecting him to come back to train with us because we need the player.

    "Hopefully he can change his point of view. The club was clear from the beginning with the player. We cannt control every single situation. Virgil is part of our club. He has a contract but we are now waiting."

    Asked if Van Dijk will face Swansea, Pellegrino added: "No, no, because this week he was with some trouble with a virus. He couldn't train the last two days."

    Warning signs were missed weeks before an epileptic teenager drowned in a bath after suffering a seizure at an NHS care unit, a doctor has admitted.

    Dr Valerie Murphy was the psychiatrist responsible for treating Connor Sparrowhawk, 18, who died at Slade House in Oxford in July 2013.

    She told a medical tribunal she "could not explain" why action was not taken after an earlier suspected fit in a bath .

    Dr Murphy has admitted a series of failings but denies misconduct.

    The organisers of Boomtown Fair music festival say revellers who were left queuing for hours yesterday afternoon have now been let in the event site.

    Some festivalgoers reported being stranded outside Matterley Bowl for 10 hours yesterday after wet weather meant the venue did not open on time.

    Boomtown apologised and said at 23:30 the gates had cleared but, shortly after 01:00, it again warned ticketholders of "prolonged" queues.

  10. Goring Gap 'ugly' railway gantries delay criticisedpublished at 10:14 British Summer Time 11 August 2017

    Network Rail has been criticised for taking too long to sort out "ugly" gantries put up in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Berkshire.

    They were put up near Goring Gap in the Chilterns as part of the electrification of the Great Western Railway.

    Residents claimed they were not properly consulted on the design which have been described as "huge metal goalposts" and have called for them to be removed.

    The rail operator met with residents in January and said it would consult on alternative designs.

    Thames Valley Railway Action Group says it's taking too long for an update on the new designs promised.

    Network Rail says discussions on what might be done are ongoing and it will report back to local people in the autumn.

  11. A3 chemical spill cleared uppublished at 10:13 British Summer Time 11 August 2017

    Firefighters have dealt with a chemical leak overnight from a lorry on the A3.

    The release was discovered coming from a container between Liphook and Petersfield at about 16:00 BST.

    Emergency services took nine hours to deal with the leak which fire crews said was a class 8 marine pollutant.

    The road was closed overnight while the liquid was cleaned up but has since reopened.

    A charity pedalo bid to circumnavigate the Isle of Wight is under way.

    The team, who set off from Yarmouth Pier earlier, aim to pedal the craft around the island in one hour relays in 14 teams of four.

    The challenge is in aid of the Wetwheels charity founded by disabled yachtsman, Geoff Holt MBE.

  14. £500,000 scanner opens at Poole Hospitalpublished at 09:14 British Summer Time 11 August 2017

    A state-of-the-art scanning service is being officially opened in Dorset this afternoon.

    Poole Hospital says the static scanning service will provide detailed imaging with lower doses of radiation to make cancer diagnosis safer for patients.

    Children and inpatients can also now be scanned at the hospital for the first time.

    The hospital said the PET/CT scanner is the first of its kind in the UK.

    The scanner replaces a mobile unit which visited the hospital each Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.

    The scanner has been funded through a £500,000 donation from the Poole Hospital Cancer Treatment Trust charity.

    A man in his 20s has died after being hit by a car in Fareham.

    The crash happened in Highlands Road shortly after midnight.

    Police said a man in his 20s has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

    Highlands Road has since reopened.

    The daredevil Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team took to the skies of Lyme Regis last night.

    Thousands turned out to watch the display during the town's regatta and carnival.

    A man's been killed after being hit by a lorry in Wareham.

    It happened yesterday lunchtime in Bere Road near Wareham Forest Tourist Park.

    The 78-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene - his family's now being supported by specially trained officers.

    Police say the driver of the Volvo lorry was uninjured.
