    A two-day strike on South Western Railway is set to go ahead next Wednesday and Thursday, after talks broke down yesterday.

    The RMT union wants a guarantee that a guard will be on every train.

    The company promises to roster a guard on every train, but the union says this is a loophole which could allow some services to run without a second crew member after new trains are delivered in two years' time.

  4. Motorists fined more than £1m at M3 roadworkspublished at 09:24 Greenwich Mean Time 3 November 2017

    Motorists have been hit with fines of more than £1m during the recent upgrade of the M3 motorway.

    In total, more than 11,000 drivers were caught breaking the temporary 50 mph speed limit. Critics say the penalties are simply a way to make money.

    The findings come as Highways England says it will consider raising the maximum speed through roadworks to 60 mph.

    The final stages of work to remove a longstanding bottleneck from Reading's road network continues this weekend.

    Cow Lane bridge in West Reading will be demolished by Network Rail contractors between tonight and Sunday.

    It's hoped the removal of the current height restriction and wider road will help relieve congestion and will allow access for double-decker buses for the first time ever. Cow Lane will reopen at 5:00 on Monday.

    Comedian Jason Manford has visited a retired paratrooper who he helped to raise more than £100,000 for charity.

    Details of 86-year-old Jeffrey Long's challenge to trek 86 miles along the Thames went viral on Tuesday after they were shared by Mr Manford on Facebook.

    The pair met up at Oakwood Hall Hotel in Mr Long's hometown of Bingley, West Yorkshire, on Thursday evening.

    Afterwards, Mr Manford described on Facebook how he had met "the man, the myth, the legend. Jeffrey!"

    Mr Long's goal when he started walking "86 miles for 86 years" - from the Thames Barrier to Caversham in Reading - was to raise £1,000 for the Poppy Appeal.

  8. 'Jihadi Jack': Fate of Oxford man accused of fighting for IS 'unknown'published at 08:03 Greenwich Mean Time 3 November 2017

    The parents of a British man accused of being a member of so-called Islamic State say they do not know if their son is dead or alive.

    Jack Letts, dubbed "Jihadi Jack", travelled to Syria in 2014 and was later captured by the Kurdish-led YPG.

    Speaking for the first time since he was charged, John Letts and Sally Lane told the BBC the last three years had been a "nightmare".

    Jack Letts, who was captured in May, has previously said he opposes IS.
