    Smoke is billowing from the Waterstones shop here in Southampton's Above Bar.

    About a dozen premises are within the cordon that has been put in place at what would be a busy time of day with many people out on their lunch break.

    One passer-by described seeing a "raging fire" within the book store.

    Fire fighters are dealing with a fire at a bookshop in Southampton city centre.

    They were called to Waterstones in Above Bar Street at 12:23 GMT.

    The shop has been evacuated.

    About £9m has been raised by an Oxford-based firm working on the development of cancer vaccines.

    Oxford Vacmedix has secured the finance from a consortium of South Korean and Chinese investors.

    It will use the money to start clinical trials for its two main vaccines which target solid tumours and cervical cancer.

    The Duchess of Cambridge has arrived at a primary school in Oxford to learn about a programme to support the emotional health of pupils.

    It is a subject of interest to Kate who has spoken of the need for early action to address mental health issues in young people.

    She is due to see a session at Pagasus Primary School where pupils are encouraged to share thoughts on topics like bullying.

    A man who took it upon himself to light up a bridge in Henley wants to make the illuminations permanent.

    Clive Hemsley used his own money to pay for the temporary lights on Henley-on-Thames bridge.

    A petition has been started to show Oxfordshire County Council the level of support for the light, in hope they'll decide keep them.

    Mr Hemsley says it was a "no-brainer" to light up the stone bridge, adding that other historic buildings like St Mary's Church were already featured with spotlights.

  9. How Winchester University helped the gum recycling revolutionpublished at 10:42 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March 2018

    It turns out Winchester University could have played a key role in the mission to recycle chewing gum.

    It was one of the first places to introduce bright pink, bubble-shaped bins, which are hung at head height, specially for disposing of the chewable treat.

    The bits of gum were then recycled into new, useful objects.

    The bins were also put at 25 Great Western Railway (GWR) stations and at Heathrow Airport.

    A man from Newbury has been charged with two counts of rape.

    Thames Valley Police has been investigating claims two women were attacked by a man claiming to be a taxi driver.

    Ruhen Miah, 42, from Newbury, was charged today.

    He is due to appear at Reading Magistrates' Court later.

    Hampshire police said officers are investigating reports of a woman in her 20s being attacked by a man in Hoglands Park on Monday night.

    The Duchess of Cambridge is visiting Pegasus Primary School in Oxford today.

    Whilst there she will hear more about a project which sees the school working with charity Family Links to support the emotional health of pupils.

    She will also join pupils for a session in which they are encouraged to share thoughts on a range of topics, including how to support a classmate if they are being bullied.

    There's a chance to listen again to a special programme celebrating the life of Sir Roger Bannister and his impact on Oxford which aired last night.

    Sir Roger, who died aged 88 on Sunday, was the first person to run a mile in under four minutes.

    He later went on to become a neurologist and was master of Pembroke College, Oxford.

    You can hear the programme again on BBC Radio iPlayer.

    A flat and the business below it in a seaside town have been destroyed by fire.

    The blaze in Lee-on-the-Solent broke out in a flat in the High Street at about 01:20 GMT.

    Firefighters are urging people living nearby to keep their windows closed until smoke in the area disperses.

    The road is expected to remain closed throughout Tuesday between Pier Street and Studland Road due to concerns over the stability of the building.

    Class A drugs and a number of weapons were seized in raids in west Oxfordshire on Monday.

    Police went into three properties in Witney and the surrounding areas at about 07:00 GMT.

    Two men, aged 22 and 26, and two 25-year-old men from Carterton were arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of drug.

    It seems like a relatively quiet morning on the roads. Here are the hotspots though:

    • In Berkshire, there are huge queues on the A3290, heading into Reading, as well as the M4 London-bound between junction 11 (Reading) and 10 (Wokingham)
    • There are also queues between junction 10 (Maidenhead) and 8/9 (Slough)
    • While congestion is also building on the A33, travelling out of Basingstoke into Reading
