Things are slowly beginning to improve for passengers at Reading Station as disruption continues on the line in to and out of London Paddington.

A new Hitachi train, that was being tested, ripped overhead wires in west London, tearing 500m of power cables.

The first service to leave Reading for Paddington since the problems happened last night left at 11:45, but rail staff here told me they anticipated a much slower journey as the train involved is going to have to negotiate a way through trains left stranded on tracks.

Things were of course far more chaotic first thing this morning when hundreds of commuters were stuck here trying to get on a South Western Railway service to Waterloo, which only runs twice an hour and is a much slower service.

  10. Portsmouth council to lobby government over base of frigatespublished at 13:14 British Summer Time 17 October 2018

The leader of Portsmouth City Council has pledged to keep fighting for the city's role in defence.

Speaking at full council on Tuesday, Gerald Vernon-Jackson said he believed there was still hope new Type 26 frigates could be based at the city's naval base, despite an announcement last week that the ships would go to Plymouth.

"I don't think this needs to be a final decision," he said.

"We know that it makes economical sense for the government to use our base, not just to work on their maintenance but as their home."

Labour councillors proposed an amendment to Mr Vernon-Jackson's motion, asking that Portsmouth only be considered as a maintenance site rather than the ships' base.

However, they were outvoted. Councillors then unanimously agreed to lobby the government to make Portsmouth the base of the frigates.

Rebecca Knox, Dorset County Council Leader and Beaminster County Councillor said "it's been a very frustrating process", adding that 2 way traffic "will be back as soon as possible".

The city council said it had made the decision to remove the 13 banks, external as the company that provides them is facing ongoing difficulties in disposing of the materials that are collected.

This is due to changes in the plastic recycling market, with material processors currently not accepting pots, tubs and trays, which make up the majority of the collections, the authority said.

This is a national issue affecting other local authorities around the country.

Great Western Railway has said train tests of the kind which led to cables being ripped down between Reading and London are common.

A spokesman said the Hitachi train being tested would have "certainly" become a part of GWR's fleet or one its sister operators.

Dan Panes added: "We don’t know the cause; I suppose some could say the whole point of testing it is to make sure this doesn’t happen in passenger service.

"The models of these trains have been running on this track for some time now, the likelihood here that this is a systemic problem with the model and make of the train is very low.

"Some of the talk of a ‘couple inches too high or a couple inches too low’ is just nonsense.”

Trains have been cancelled between Reading and London Paddington

Great Western Railway (GWR) has advised people commuting between Reading and London Paddington not to travel unless it is “absolutely necessary”.

Services have been cancelled after 500m of overhead cables were torn down by a Hitachi train being tested.

Dan Panes, head of communications at GWR, said he expected services to be delayed "most of today at the very least".

He added: "It’s a big bit of work that Network Rail have to do to get these lines back up.

"Our focus is on today making sure our trains and our crew are in the right place so we can start tomorrow morning operating.

“What we are aware of at the moment, it’s not one of our trains. It looks like a train being operated by Hitachi, a Class 802 train, was probably the first train to be caught up in all of this last night."
