    The A35 is still closed east of Bere Regis, Dorset, after a "single vehicle" crash which happened at about 07:09, police have said.

    An ambulance has been called to the scene, between Morden Park Corner and Woodland Cross.

    Police said they could not determine when the road would be reopened.

    Students at Southampton University have aired their views over comments by the union president that a mural painted as a memorial to soldiers killed in World War One should be "painted over".

    Emily Dawes has since apologised for her tweet about the 1916 painting by Sir William Rothenstein.

    She received a backlash on social media after suggesting the artwork should be removed from the the university's Senate Room as it was a "mural of white men".

    Wokingham is the best place to live for your health, according to a study out today.

    Researchers say the affluent town has half the number of premature deaths as more deprived areas such as Blackpool.

    Half of all premature deaths in the UK are linked to risk factors including tobacco, diet, alcohol and drug use and obesity, according to the study published in The Lancet.

    Hampshire Constabulary, external wants to speak to these two men in connection with a violent public order incident in Southampton.

    Between 20:15 and 20:45 on 6 August a group of men were involved in a fight on Kingsclere Avenue in Weston.

    A 47-year-old man from Southampton suffered serious head injuries and was taken to Southampton General Hospital for treatment.

    Three men from Southampton, aged 24, 40, and 44, were arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. They were released from custody while inquiries continue.

  15. Fraud probes save Reading council £480kpublished at 17:20 British Summer Time 25 October 2018

    Reading Borough Council, external says tenancy fraud investigations have saved it £480,000 over the last 18 months.

    Successful investigations are on the rise, with the council recovering 14 properties in the first six months of the 2018/19 financial year compared with 18 properties in 2017/18.

    The savings estimate is based on a council assessment that, on average, it costs £15,000 a year to place a family in temporary accommodation.

    The RMT union, external has announced port workers in Portsmouth, Aberdeen and Newcastle will strike as part of a dispute over pay.

    They are employed by global shipping logistics and maintenance outfit MacGregors, and the walk outs are planned for 9 to 12 November.

    RMT general secretary, Mick Cash, said: "This dispute is about a key group of port-based staff fighting for a fair pay deal that protects and enhances their standard of living."

    A family-run hardware store which has been trading in Reading for almost 90 years is set to close.

    Drews the Ironmongers says it is shutting its doors after Christmas because it can no longer compete against online shopping.

    Chairman David Drew said telling the store's 26 staff they were going to be made redundant was "the worst day in our family's life".

  19. Debenhams 'seeks to close 50 stores'published at 15:50 British Summer Time 25 October 2018

    Debenhams is understood to be seeking to close 50 of its 166 stores in a radical overhaul as it prepares to reveal a record £500m loss.

    The struggling department store chain has previously said 10 stores were earmarked for closure over the next five years but has raised that target.

    It is not known which stores will be affected but branches in the south include Southampton, Bournemouth, Reading, Oxford, Winchester, Weymouth, Thatcham, Portsmouth, Basingstoke and Witney.
