    The chief constable of Thames Valley Police climbed into an overturned car to support the driver, after spotting the vehicle near Kidlington, Oxfordshire, this morning.

    Francis Hapgood was first on the scene of the crash at Middle Street, Islip, at about 07:50 GMT, the force said.

    Police said the car was only vehicle involved and the driver was not injured.

    A planned strike on South Western Railway on Saturday 10 November has been called off.

    The RMT rail union said the walk out had been withdrawn "following consultation with our branches", although it said strikes on all other Saturdays in November would still go ahead.

    The long-running dispute is over the future of guards on trains.

    Some National Express coaches between Portsmouth and London have been running on fuel made from used cooking oil, as part of a three-month trial.

    Operator Lucketts Travel said the so-called hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) offered a big reduction in carbon emissions and no modifications were needed to its vehicles.

    In May, Solent ferry operator Red Funnel announced a trial of HVO, external on its ships.

    Average waiting times for 101 calls to Thames Valley Police (TVP) to be answered have gone up by more than 400% in the last year.

    Oxford Road Safer Neighbourhood Forum, which obtained the figure through a Freedom of Information request, said the system was "breaking down".

    Chairman Peter Bowyer said: "It has become very difficult to report things on 101. I think it is demand for 999 that is causing it."

    Ch Supt Christian Bunt, head of contact management for TVP, said: "I am sure the public would appreciate that we have to prioritise emergency calls."

    Developers have applied to build a gas-fired power station on farmland near Milton Common, Oxfordshire.

    Power firm Stratera Energy said the 7.4m (24ft) high plant would be capable of generating 50MW of electricity to feed into the National Grid.

    Great Haseley Parish Council said the station would be "detrimental to the area" and would generate "visible plumes above tree cover".

    South Oxfordshire District Council is due to decide on the application in December.

    Tomorrow's Carabao Cup game between Southampton and Leicester City has been postponed in the wake of the helicopter crash in which Leicester owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha died.

    Two members of his staff, the pilot and a passenger were also killed when the aircraft spiralled out of control and crashed in a fireball on Saturday.
